Hi all,

Noticed that a stop/tail light bulb was out recently, so bought a couple of new bulbs and replaced both of them. I noticed that in both light fittings the plastic of both the bulb housing and the lens cover has melted slightly!!
So I turned the lights on and then put my hand on the light fitting a few minutes later, it does feel excessively hot.

I have no other electrical issues on vehicle, a 1988 90 with 200tdi conversion.

Would this be down to cheap crap light fittings?
I bought a cheap set off e bay a few months ago and replaced the lot as the originals were tired. Wondering if they are poorly manufactured and they are not properly insulated somehow.
Should I replace the lamp units with some Wipac ones?

Look forward to your thoughts.

Have you got em in round the right way? ;)

I got glass lenses on mine!

As they are filament lamps they do generate heat, which would be enough to melt a plastic lens, but only if they are very close or touching.

Have you got the right size lamps in, or are you using 'big bulbs'?

Hi,

yes I think the bulbs are the right size, they are nothing special.
I did notice on ebay last week that you can buy LED stop/tail bulbs, I suppose they might generate less heat - might give them a whirl!!
