Question re the speaker unit in the backdoor

The rubber ring around the speakers in mine has completely disintegrated, so in my quest to throw unnecessary money at a 22 year old car, I'm looking at sorting them out.

I'm wondering though if I can just change the speakers themselves rather than the whole unit. And if so, whilst I can find Philips versions quite easily, I'm not having much luck finding Harman Kardon versions.

Question then:
- can I just swap the speakers themselves
- worth looking for like for like, or whatever would fit (and any suggestions)

As they are subs, best to replace with the same, but you won't get real LR ones I doubt. But maybe you can replace them with summat similar, this may help.

These are mine - given the cones are fine, it seems a shame to chuck them but I'm wondering if I can just replace the foam/rubber surround easily....

Those look in amazingly good nick considering.
There are bits on the internet which will show you how to repair them and you can buy the bits you need.
 
 
If you go for new subwoofers look for 6.5” with a max mounting depth of 3”.
You may have to alter the mounting area depending on the magnet size.
 
Mine aren't even connected at the moment due to the previous owner fitting an aftermarket head unit. Anyone know if the amp needs a speaker level or line-out level signal to work? Or should I just gut the enclosure and fit something aftermarket?
 
Anyone know what size these speakers are - I'm trying to find the spec somewhere. They measure about 12.5cm across (paper cones) and about 16cm to the edge of the mount but i'm not sure where you measure to. Is that 6.5" (as suggested above?)

I'm thinking that they are more like 6" but hoping someone might have an actual spec!

Line level, I'm pretty sure. apparently you can get dooberrys that convert one to the other.

First of all u need a head unit with a pre-amplified output, then you will find adjustments for the output gain in the head units menu.
Your connecting to the amp in the rear door which has no audio adjustments available on the door amp, unlike stand alone amplifiers.
 
Just reread the thread and realised you are trying to make a connection the previous owner didn't bother with. Having taken the original head unit out.
So @discool seems to know what you need.
Might be a good idea to get the connections sorted first before fixing the speakers!

What ever size should match the existing… no alterations required, so a bog standard frequency ie. 44 - 25,000 Hz will give a low bass, lower you will need a larger loudspeaker and a separate amp with power higher than the existing 45watt.
I have a 12” sub in a box in my boot, plus a 200watt amp under the front seat to keep the passengers seat warm.

So why not wander into a shop with your loudspeaker and ask for one to match it, then buy two, go back and fit them, then get on with the rest of your disco life fixing things. Simples :)

The D2 tailgate amp and loudspeakers is the same as fitted to the D1, which has a sticky label stating Philips as the brand. :(
 
I would have thought you could go to a breaker, might let you have a wander around to see what's available. I had door speakers from an old Citroën which looked similar. Lots of cars of that era used Philips derived radios so might be an option.
 
That involves leaving the house when the internet is just......there.....

(good suggestions though - I'm just lazy!)

Another question - I haven't been to a breaker in years. Can you still just wander round scrapyards with a toolbox?
