hi there ..aquired a freelander last year via a well known auction site ..lol
noticed a grinding noise come from the rear of the lander ..underneath mainly..been told its probably the bearings in the diff,,have noticed a oil leak from the diff inspection plate..was thinking of topping it up..but firstly i want to know do the inspection plates have a gasket of some kind ?..and i presume its a level fill ?..and what oil do i use to refill ?:)

sort of but a lot of people say it is nearly impossible to get it to seal wright wilst on the car it really needs to be as dry as can be before putting the beed of gasket seal around it good luck with it

First thing to do is drop your prop and vcu to make sure it's not your vcu bearings.
If the noise is still there then check your wheel bearings.
Lastly the rear diff will normally leak from one of the drive shaft seals and if you can pin point which one......easy with a visual inspection then a grinding bearing noise will more than likely be the weeping sides drive shaft carrier bearing.
It's a fairly easy job as long as you have the right tools but for ease of access you will need to drop the diff off the car to change them(you may as well change both).
