Hi

I am working on a freelander (year 2000).

The brake cylinders on the rear drum brakes were weeping so I decided to change the cylinders at the same time as I changed the brake shoes.

I cant get the brake cylinder mounting bolts out. I used an 8mm ring spanner and it just slips around. So before I round the bolt head off and add to my head ache, a simple question.

Are they a special size, type or what? Ive just soaked them with WD40 and retired back to my computer with my tail hanging low.

Any ideas anyone?

Please help a poor 1st timer

just done mine they are a 8mm ring spanner trouble is you got a steel bolt going into alloy give them a good tap that sometimes loosens them if not use plus gas or simular wd not that good or try 8mm socket

ill give it a go. My 8mm ring just slips arround so maybe someone has had a go at them before and rounded them off (or maybe they have lost some of the head width due to rust).

Ill get a torch on it to warm things up a bit, and I suppose if that fails then cutting off the head would be the last option.

The other side looks ok so maybe that will be easier?

I had the same happen to mine.I got it off by hammering on an open imperial spanner, not sure what size. You could try to batter on a 7mm.Get a few bolts ready to replace the knackered ones, and copper grease them for the next guy.

Try and use an impact socket if you can as these are only 6 point not 12, and put everything back together with a smear of copper grease on all threads to prevent future seizing.

Sometimes bolts like this are just not worth the hassle - grind the head off then fit a new bolt with the replacement cylinder - so much easier in the long run

Hi,

Thanks all for your suggestions. In the end I resorted to a cold chisel and a lump hammer and the bolt heads popped off like they were shot out of a cannon!

More dumm questions from me in the future I fear!

Thanks again!
