Firstly I've never owned either [well recently a 3.5 V8 RR 25 years ago], I really want a Defender again but have spent 3 weeks on the PC every hour I'm not asleep or at work and haven't found one. I live in the countryside, I'm cycling to work everyday across country and something I've not done in years [backsides killing me], I've got to get a motor.
I had £7.5k for a defender but don't want to spend that on either in title as they don't seem to hold their money so well, with a budget of £3000 what would you buy?
You seem to get a lot of Range Rover for that:

Similarly you get a half decent Disco so for a guy that knows nothing about either, what would be better having the same to spend on either one?
Rangies were really juicy but I noticed some have the same diesel engines as Defenders and Disco's, how do they tally up on fuel consumption remembering defenders aren't that brilliant either.
Reliability was something that put me off Disco's in the first place [all the gadgets], I'm guessing it's going to be the same for the RR [or worse].
Petrol or diesel? they're juicy anyway right??
My needs, well I have a vintage tractor I sometimes take to the shows, I have a 2 1/2 ton ifor williams trailer that I over fill with logs and have to haul out of a muddy field a couple of times a year [I've had my 110" in low, diff lock and still had all four wheels spinning]. Mostly it will be for short journeys back and forth work and down the beach with the dogs.
Cheers for any help in advance and currently watching 7 defenders on ebay and all must be 5 hours plus on a coach.
