Had a bit of a rainwater leak in the front passenger footwell - carpet sodden! Anyway noticed this crack on the black plastic plenum under the windscreen (where the retaining screw is) - there is another crack starting at the driver's side as well under the other retaining screw. Can't see it in the picture (out of view), but there is a small hole as well - broken plastic.

Anyway, covered up hole and cracks with black duct tape and all good - bone dry now, even after being out in very heavy rain for around an hour.

I notice this plenum piece is c.AUD500 to replace!!! Black duct tape blends in fairly well, but does anyone have a neater, long-lasting fix they can suggest? I understand if you want to remove the plenum piece you also need to remove the bonnet and the two A-pillar plastic covers on each side? Is that correct?

Sometimes you can luck out and find an uncracked windscreen scuttle cowl from someone parting out a Disco 2 or at an auto recycle yard. I found a used one on eBay for 35 quid.
Here is how you replace it…

I have just done this job see my post, "WET CARPETS" I removed the the "A" post plastic covers and replaced them with out much trouble , the windscreen scuttle cowl, is not there to stop all the water, it a cover, I had leaks, the wiper mounting plate , the corner just below the screen had a hole, and the seam seal is old and cracked but I think most of the water was getting in on the grommet on the heated windscreen wires, any way , I welded up up the rust hole then scrapped out a lot of the old seam sealer and re sealled the lot followed by a good coat of hammerite paint, well it been very wet here for the last few days and so far still dry, one thing is I have hopefully just sourced a new rubber seal for the top of the plactic screen cover a local firm sent me some samples and one fit very well so I have ordered 2 mtr and will fit it and post the results hopefully next week

I'll take the scuttle out as per the Atlantic British video (install new windscreen wipers at the same time) - looks fairly straightforward - great How-To video by the way!

I have a Meguiars vinyl/plastic/rubber reconditioner and UV shield - I'll use that after I clean it up. Plastic/vinyl susceptible to the UV (hot Australian summer sun) - goes brittle and cracks. Wonder if the scuttle is thermoplastic so I can use a soldering iron underneath to reseal the cracks? Otherwise might look for some black sealing compound - any ideas?

Update: All good - no leaks! Repaired scuttle/plenum cracks - removed, cleaned, heavy duty black duct tape on underside to pull cracks together, sealed topside cracks with black automotive external sealant and bought a new scrivet. Applied a plastic/vinyl reconditioner to the scuttle and conditioned the seals as well. Also tightened up one of the wiper arms (very loose) and lubricated the mechanism with lithium grease. Put a new air intake foam strip in place. Looks great and no leaks!:)
