Hi i have a freelander 1 hse with the sat nav. my question is i want to change the radio for a alpine and do away with the sat nav. the original radio has the car alarm light built in that flashes when you lock the car. if i change the radio can i connect up to the buld that is in the spedo that is doing nothing at the moment. thanks.

pretty sure the "alarm led" on the sat nav is nothing to do with the alarm but merely a dummy led that flashes when the main 12v power to the radio is off - I think there is even an option somewhere to have it turned off or on.

why is the one on the spedo not flashing if the other is a dummy any ideas.

I also have an HSE.
I'm interested in following this thread as I'm intending doing the same.

Can you connect the underseat CD changer to the Alpine?
Does the new radio fit exactly in the hole left in the dash?
The warning lights in the in instrument cluster are non replaceable LEDs I believe which one do you mean to use and is there a spare terminal to connect to?
Haynes says that if an LED fails the whole cluster must be changed!!!!!
Can you get easy access to the rear of the cluster?

mine only has a single cd player as there is a amp under the front seat not a cd player

What year HSE have you got?

Mine left the factory on 13 Sept 2004 - I've got the amp under the passenger seat and a 6 CD changer under the driver seat. :D
march 2004 just a single cd in radio and a plastic kind a hump thing under the drivers seat. on another note in the cubby box at rear there is a box screwed to the underside of lid whats this about ??

Ah, - in the rear storage box, beside the tool kit.

That's all the gubbins relating to the sub-woofers and whatnot that comes allied to the Harman/Karden upgraded sound system.

Do you have an H/K logo on the 'tweeters' on the doors? If so - that's it.
