I'm almost finished refurbishing my front prop. I have trawled the forums looking for an answer to my issue, but found others with same problem but no answers. The issue is, I have replaced the centre bearing inside the Hooke's (double cardan) joint and expected the bearing kit to contain a new hard rubber dust cover: It does not. Now, I realise these shafts are made as non-serviceable items, and what I'm doing is fitting replacement UJs from a kit of parts, but what should I do about the missing cover? Does anybody know a supplier or source I can get one from, or do I just leave it off? I can't reuse the old one as it is well and truly FUBAR!

Not done this joint before myself but looking at the joint details this appears to help seal off the open end of the centre bearing from dust and dirt.
There is already a seal for the outer part of the open end of the bearing with the kit as a separate item and the inner shaft would seem to have an O ring sealing that before the roller bearings.
I've not done it as I said but I'm thinking of a cut off section of suitable ID tubing in rubber or silicon (old radiator hose, etc) to replace the old one.
It would seem to need to be long enough to make contact at both ends to hold it in place properly but if a good fit over the bearing housing it only needs to seal well on the one face.
It seems as you say only a dust/dirt seal because the bearing has its own primary seals.

Rubber tubing cut to the correct length would seem to be a way forward but as I say I have yet to look at my front prop shaft.
Just a thought!

Yes, thanks for that. I was think along similar lines myself, i.e., make something to fit! It's very annoying though that the GKN bearing kits have been put together, but no mention anywhere that you can't get a new cover seal. Still, can't have everything I suppose. :)

After a bit of internet "surfing", I find that the "dust boot" is most likely made by Hardy/Dana Spicer and is readily available in the US for double cardan rebuilds on Jeeps (spit!), and Ford Pickups. Now, as mine is all reassembled now, I'm not about to take it all apart again to replace the boot with one that I have no idea will actually fit. I couldn't find the dimensions of the Spicer boot. It has identical make up as the one on the LR prop, which has a 40mm (approx.) boss that the metal ring on the boot fits nice and tightly to.
If anybody else is going to rebuild their front prop, I'd recommend getting hold of one of these and letting us all know if it's a good fit. There are plenty of instructions/you-tubes on rebuilding double cardan joints, so am surprised us Landy owners are so in the dark on the subject.
