HELP! i bought a 1.8 3 door freelander just before xmas. i have just replaced the viscous coupling (with a bit of help!) trouble is now that there is an oil leak from the front prop shaft where it goes into the engine. there is a c.v gaiter that appears to be leaking. is there an easy fix for this, or does it mean a new prop shaft?

The front propshaft connects to the IRD. The gaiter is there to protect the sliding joint. Is it possible that this is a little excess grease that has just oozed out on reassembly. Any leaks in this area would be from the IRD itself which is gear oil, quite distinctive in smell. The oil from the IRD can not leak into that joint so i think you are safe, unless the oil is leaking around the IRD output shaft. First thing check your oil level, the level bung is just to the right of the output shaft.

yo! DROID, how goes it? well i've had the prop to bits - again! the leak is definitely from the gaiter, it was split!!!! took the whole lot to bits and the bearings have given up the ghost. they came out with the last of the grease!!! now need to get a replacement front prop! any suggestions??????
