can anyone shed light on how to get the props balenced on a 1.8 freebie
bought the vehicle for the wife cheap with no vcu or props the ird is good and the props were in the back when i bought it along with the knackered unit no marks on unit props diff or ird so is it trial and error or is there a way on getting this right first time

it dosent matter where it bolts at diff or ird ,the shafts when made are balanced as indivual shafts and not balanced on vehicle ,how would you fit a new one ?

As James says the props is balanced as a unit and not with reference to the cars. Have took mine off loads of times without marking. Just think if you broke the rear prop and replaced it. How could you balance the new part to the old part without special kit.

As above props are balanced themselves. The reason why some mark them before removing is due to other reporting "problems" with balance when refitting their own, without markers. Hence if you have the opertunity to mark before removal, then it may help later on. Just fit them and see how it goes.

as already said props are done as units not on the car

Hi ... just thought I would add my 2 pennith ......... I totally agree with the comments above........however, the Freelander has one tricky bit on the prop.....the tripode..slip CV Joint. Coulple of things, this fits to the ird via six bolts. Before fitting make sure both mating surfaces are totally clean - so the two go together nice and flat. Lastly ... the Tripode can wear ..... causing vibration... and if you have some mild wear and if you put back the assembly it will invariably not reside in the same wear position causing potential vibration. The tripode repair kit is no longer available..... Freelander Spares do a replacement front prop for £199...
Hope this helps...

if cv is worn it may well vibrate ,as long as it is bolted squarely to ird flange it will make no difference to which holes its fastened to ,you dont mark drive shafts when you refit them back in hub for goood reason as it makes no difference ,most mechanics you know that mark dont understand engineering principles ,

yes.

of course it won't hurt to do it anyway but never had a problem not doing it in 30yrs

The reason they do it is because used shafts will have bedded in to a certain location on the mating surface.
Just to save any potential problems arising from this they make sure it goes back as it came off.
I know this will make absolutely no difference on a new or clean install.

I personally don't mark but I do clean all surfaces before refit and I haven't experienced any issues either ;)

if its bedded into mating surface (unlikely) change ird flange though ive never seen it ,only damage from loose bolts
