Hi all
Is it possible to fit a becker sat nav head unit to a pre facelifted freelander? Is there anything special needed?? i have been offered one from a Discovery and would really like it.

I haven't got a clue but if it involves messing with the vehicles electrics then you could be opening up a can of worms.

yes you can i had one of ebay in my 2003 kalahari but coudnt get the steering weel controls to work also it has to be wired a certain way take it to an auto electric place and they will advise hope this helps

Thanks for this.
The person who has offered me the Becker system informs me that in order for it to work correctly you need a speed sense wire and directional feed from the gear position so it knows which direction you are going in and at what speed. Wierd set up I think.
Does anyone know if this wiring is a standard fit on all Freelanders or is it special to those with the Sat Nav unit? I assumed that the ABS system needs this info, so hoped that it was probably standard wiring.

I read somewhere that all Freelanders regardless of model had all same standard wiring fitted but on different specs you just didn't get the equipment. For example the powerfold mirror wiring is there but you just don't get the actual powerfold mirrors on certain models. I am not sure if that is true or not.

Hi Mick,
The wiring may be a problem??? How are you with a meter and pliers.
I fitted a Cruise Control to an 06' TD4 Manual HSE (has Becker unit as std) - traced out much of the 'standard CC' wiring against the Rave and found that it's not there, what is there does not appear at the right connectors down by the tunnel (re. Rave) and there are different tunnel area wiring sub-looms listed in the Microcat for manual and auto for the same year. (only the auto's got the CC option in 06')
The CC uses the same road speed signal derived from the ABS CCU as the Audio head unit - if your audio unit varies volume with road speed then this is already present at the head unit (red/white or orange/white wire).
The direction feed, from memory, uses the reversing light signal - don't remember where that appears at head unit plugs.
Probably do-able but you may need to run in a few wires and fit some adaptors to match to the Becker DIN layout?
Hope my recollections help.
TD John

I think you will find that a lot of wiring on many makes of cars are a standard loom and its the equipment thats missing. That said, why install a satnav that costs so much to update and isnt full postcode friendly? Mind you, after TD John's experience maybe it isnt as common as I thought any more :(

I've done this and there's a fairly easy way to do it. (although does require some basic wiring skills and patience)
Firstly buy a dash mounted GPS aerial - standard fit nav uses a GPS built into the roof aerial - bit fiddly & costly to do - dash mounted GPS works just fine. I put mine under the dash behind the cup holders.
As TDJohn says - locate the speed sensor wire - it can be found under the fuse box on the driver side - orange/white wire if I remember right. Check the RAVE manual for exact location.
The direction sensor - I've not idea why this was fitted since I rarely navigate to an address in reverse (perhaps it improves accuracy). Anyway - just earth it and it tells the radio/nav you're going forward - disconnect it and it assume you're in reverse.
As for the rest of the wiring (speakers power etc), well this depends on the exact model you're replacing. On mine it was an 04 with visteon in dash changer and this required an ISO interface lead and some slight changes to the order of the 12v constant and ignition power leads, but all in all not that tricky.

I've yet to get around to sorting the steering wheel controls - apparently the becker nav unit has another interface/box between the controls on the wheel and the radio - I think in standard fit it's located in or around the gear lever covers - no idea what part number as I've yet to get around to this - not really missed the steering wheel controls to be honest.
Do you have the wiring loom for this unit? I think the connectors are standard ISO ones so not critical.
Also another thing to consider is whether your original audio system had the harmon kardon amp and sub in the boot cubby (which if fitted will no doubt be wet). If so this amp set up may complicate matters - not overly - just more speaker cables to connect.
If all this sounds too much like hard work or if any of it has gone over your head then it's probably not worth the effort. A portable windscreen mounted sat nav will be much less fuss.
