Hi LZ Team,

Im after a little more power from my 2 1/4 Petrol.

The engine is a Military recon and has great compression.

Other than fitting a V8 I have the following on my to-do list;

- Adjust spark plugs to correct gap

- Adjust points to correct gap

- Tweak ignition timing

- Tweak mixture on carb

What other things can I do with out spending to much money?

Port and Polish the inlet manifold? How much material can be removed and has any one got a inlet manifold for sale?

Widen the inlet ports on the engine, how much can be removed before the gasket is reached?

Lighten Flywheel? I know this wont increase performance but it will make the engine more responsive. Again, how much can be removed before it will affect the idel?

97 octane fuel, I know its more expensive but how much diffrence does it make?

Let me know your thoughts on the above and if you have any further iseas.

Thanks again

Yannis

in my opinion:

probably not worth lightening the flywheel, might make it not trickle along in 4wd as well?

see no reason why porting the head wouldn't work - from my A series experience that makes a lot of difference, the series head looks to be similar (just a lot bigger!!) spare head and a dremel, there's no reason why you cant make your own stage 2 head.

raise the compression ratio as well - skim a bit off.

exhaust - it's a bit rubbish but no real cheap way of getting it better unless you fancy making your own manifold.

inlet manifold - no idea what it's like inside, but don't polish it shiny as it's worse, causes the fuel to condense out again. apparently.

97 octane fuel not worth it unless you're made of money and have it set up to take advantage of the higher octane rating.

Yep higher ocatne fuel wont give you any more power, unless you raise the compression above that 95 ron standard engines can take, and if you do that you'll be stuck on the more expensive stuff.
You cant really fit a K&N, or even play with the exhaust, if you can do fab then maybe get a RC50 or something and weld it into the pipe.
Matching the inlet manifold to the head might be a good idea, as a better carb maybe a weber DCOE or a dell orto twinchoke.
An electronic dizzy is a good idea, or maybe a megajolt programmable system allthough that isnt the spirit of series land rover.
If you wanna spend money then you could do stuff like porting the head, fitting rimflo valves, hepolite pistons, and if you can get one a wilder cam allthough the latter might also screw up off roading somewhat as you dont really want to compromise low revs performance.
Thought about a TDI?

I have fitted a K&N, im using a Discovery air box and homemade snorkel.

I am looking for a electronic ignition system as per my new thread. I did do a search but there was no up-to-date information.

I put on a new carb last night, that has made things much smoother.

I will look at a high output coil to go with electronic ignition.

If im feeling brave, I may look into enlarging the ports.

Thanks again for your ideas

I mentioned this on the other thread you mentioned, a good way to get a performance ignition system is to rob one off a ford, the edis system that doesnt have a dizzy, you fit a modded pulley or get a new one and fit it to the end of the crank pulley to give the position pulses to the module, everything else is straightforward, you can get the edis remapped for the landy, to be honest it'd probably run fine as stock.

Coils vary a lot, the dc resistance of the coil and the max dwell time are important parameters, get your ignition system before the coil or you might end up with one that wont do.

Out of interest you mentioned a disco airbox, well I have a converted 300 tdi series, and one of my current jobs is the air filter, I'm looking at re-using the series oil filled one, or the disco one, where abouts under the bonnet have you put the disco airbox?

Power to weight ratio? If you loose as much exess weight as possible in effect you will have more power, and it dosent cost anything. I thought about replacing all the glass(except the screen) with perspex to save weight.

Good point V8jon, however im not sure what I can really get out of this. As you say replace the glass, but that will only be a few kg, maybe synthetic winch rope would make the same diffrence.

Dr Pepper, I have mounted the box on the front left wing (looking twords the bulk head) I made a special bracket that bolts to the bottom of the airbox and the wing, and then a strap at the top to hold it all in place.

I have some sylicon pipe and a bit of drain pipe running to the carb. looks quite smart.

I will take some pictures tomorrow and load them up. Its a well worth while mod and dirt cheap to do it you get an airbox for free.
