power steering

Gidday,

i am doing some work on a mates 109 ex army land rover and i have the right front guard off. This seems like an ideal time to put power steering on the old bus, so i'm after some info on what bits to use.

I thought that i would just be able to bolt the p/steering off of an old rangey on there, but noticed the current steering box bolted up neer the firewall with a drag link to an idler on the chassis. Not the the same as my 110.

Any info on what to use and tips on how to do it would be greatly appreciated.

As it is an ex army landy, it has a big kickarse, 24 volt generator mounted on the top right of the engine.

A lot of chopping and changing to put raingy/defender unit on series,eg moving front cross member,but there is a power assist kit to be had.

do you mean normal power steering?

if its a hydraulic system, I didnt think that was legal, because there is no fail-safe system.

yes there is only tractors and plant use full power steering as there is no feed back especially noticeable when having to centre steering your self when cornering the one i was thinking about run alongside drag link with a vavle block incorperated which is operated by action of drag link hence power assisted

If you really want power steering on a Series motor - use a P38 PAS box.

Yup! That's the way I'm going as well.
I had originally thought of going the same route as the Scout box because the late Daihatsu Foutrak steering box is the same, so I'm told.
There are plenty of P38 power steering boxes on ebay now for some reason.
I bought one last week but remember to get the banjo bolts, the fluid reservoir and as much of the piping as you can.
I have been told by somebody who has carried out this conversion that when it comes to fit the P38 box then the straight ahead position of the drop arm is not the straight ahead position, on a Series 2 at least. It is considerably further to the off side on a RHD series 2.
One detail to bear in mind because the link above shows it (incorrectly) as straight ahead.

plus also you will have to alter steering linkage and remove box,the other just fitted aside drag link

thanks for your input guys the landy is not mine so i may not go ahead with the project. Modifications to that sort of extent require certification over here and it can be quite expensive. Perhaps i will encourage my mate to do a bit of weightlifting and build his muscles up,. At least he won't have to worry about the missus borrowing it that way.
