Power steering pump 200tdi

Hi all,

Have searched this but couldn't find an answer so apologies if been previously posted.

My dad's 110 1989 200tdi when on full lock the steering pump squeals like a pig and stops spinning upon investigation there is some play on the power steering pulley belt seems tight


What are you thoughts ?

dont keep it on full lock. yu will bugger the pump.

So do you think it's had it ?

There seems to be play on the pulley about 2mm-3mm in and out. Compared this with my 110 200tdi and there is no play.

It's the pump when on full lock or close to full lock the pump stops turning and belt starts squealing . Have checked belt

The pumps are lubricated by the pas oil, BUT on the defender version there is a support bearing for the longer shaft that relies on the assembly grease alone when originally built and they fail especially if you do any off road work.
Twice the price of the disco version as well!
Ive had two fail in 3 years, one shaft sheared clean off due to knackered bearing, on the other the bearing just collapsed

If the belt has worn thin it will slip even when tight. Side to side play says bearing on the way out.
