The bottom oil seal on the steering box is leaking fairly badly, is this a replaceable item?

Vehicle: Disco 2 TD5 1999.

Still waiting for my Rave cd from ebay, but have a couple of days free to sort it in the meantime if it is replaceable, and if so what is the bleeding procedure?

I've had this mate, and the general opinion is, yes you can fix it with a set of seals, but its a bitch of a job to do yourself, and will probably last a couple of months and go again.

Things to bear in mind when doing this is the airbag sensors are down there somewhere, the steering arm could be an arse to get off unless you've got proper pulling gear and theres some sort of radiator pipe you can break while youre at it if you are not carrefull!

I ran mine for a couple of months an just topped it up every couple of days, doesnt do any harm.

Eventually I had to have it repaired by a pro cost around £350 I think for a reconbox job all ok at the mo.

If youre in the North Wales area, I can tell you who did mine. Crackin job.

Have fun!

Thanks Leaky Landy,

Have now got my rave cd courtesy of ebay, and read the relevant chapter, don't see the need to remove box as they recommend so will give it a go soon, picking seals up this afternoon. Will take care around aforementioned pipes and keep an eye out for that airbag sensor too, thx again for advice.

sorry mine only TD5 disco 2 and Freelander,

look on ebay - loads on there.

Sorry Bud, mines only td5 2!

How goes it with the stearing box? And how the fek do you stop a sunroof leaking.......tryed alsorts. Got Gaffer tape on it at the mo!

Been too busy with other things last couple of days so prolly try over weekend, my rear sunroof leaking too at moment, so if anyone answers your question I will read with interest. :D

Just got round to doing mine today, and the oil seals are slightly different to the ones I took out, 1 has tapered sides, the other is standard, which is the upper and which is the lower? or did you not do it at all on yours?

oil seals

:) :) :)

Rave CD shows only normal type oil seals, no tapered ones or dust covers like my Steering box output shaft seal kit, nor does the parts programme at landrover show it any better:confused:

Yeah finally got the job done this afternoon, no more leaky steering box.

Was second time lucky though :( had 50-50 chance of which way round the selas went & guess what I lost, so had to go out this morning and buy another seal kit and dismantle it all again bol**x.

Oh well fixed at last, just hope it lasts more than the couple of months Leaky Landy predicted.......
