Possible gear box broke

Hi. I have rr 2002 3td6 auto.
Was giving it some welly other day and whilst heavy breaking I had strong smell of burning oil/transmission fluid. Stick had got knocked in neutral and whilst in motion there was definitely wheels lock up.
Whilst in drive everything works fine but when I take my foot of the gas there is a sound and feel of metal to metal. Any help to what the problem could be will be appreciated.cheers

Drop the oil pan on the box and don't drive it if you don't have to!!
If there are metal flakes in the gbox oil pan the box is toast.
The oil cooler and pipes will at least cleaning and or replacing depending on the contamination. Check the oil pan first to confirm

Cheers for the welcome. Also could it be clutch related as similar sound but this would,nt explain the oil smell. Just wondered if something is cooked.

Could the exhaust have fell ,or broke and your getting fumes and exhaust hitting the body ,,,ie metal on metal..... olso could be melting something underneath .

Might be brakes on the metal. After hard braking. Or sticking…
