high all was driving my 1996 4.6 p38 when i noticed a very quiet whining sound from it i took it out of gear and revved it up while moving and the noise went so would imagine its coming from the gearbox or something as only there when you reach about 30 and in gear it is very quiet you can only just hear it and there are no other noise or any problem selecting gears etc etc just this is the anything i can check to maybe stop a future more expensive problem occuring and ideas/advice would be great thanks

I would hazard a guess at a bearing. But from your description afraid i cannot be more specific, as i do not posses supernatural powers.

are there any checks i can do and maybe prevent total failure if was the diff/gearbox or do i just check fluid levels and run it till it dies??

Good chance it's the transfer box output shaft bearings. Relatively cheap fix price wise but a pain in the ass to strip and replace. One of those jobs where it's £10 for the parts and a day and a half's work to fix !!!

ha ha always one... thanks for advice people will se how it goes and let you know

Not as daft as you may think it sounds. It is impossible from your description to pinpoit what the sounds is. Go to Machine Mart. Buy one two tonne jack, four two tonne axle stands, one stethescope. Jack up car place on stands (on level ground) start engine put in gear. Get someone to press loud pedal until speedo reads 30 mph. Get under car and apply stethescope to various bearing housings. That way you can come on here and say i have a small whine from the diff nose bearings, front output bearing, rear output bearing and so on. Then someone can tell you how to repair it. But a slight whine from somewhere in the transmission is not really good enough as a diagnostic description i am afraid.

was just asking as there seem to be loads of common faults with rr and thought was worth a ask incase may have just been one of these things cheers anyway
