Hi all,

As a new owner of a Defender and importing it into Ireland I had to get a DOE (MOT like) test done.

During the test the mechanic said that the 110 was in great nick for a vehicle 5 years old, the only thing he could find wrong was there there was a small amount of oil leaking from the pinion seals on the front and rear diffs.

Now, as a bit of a novice to the game could someone tell me if this is a bad thing or just a bit of the old "all Landies leak something" . If if doesn't warrant immediate repair could I get some tips on how to keep an eye on it!!

Sorry to be a pain but I'm only learnin'

Cheers

Yes, most Landies leak in various places. Keep an eye on the diffs and check the oil regularly, you don't want to run them dry! The seals are cheap and relatively easy to do but a mechanic will charge a fair whack if you don't do it yourself.

There's only one way to do it mate, pour oil in until it drips/pours out! No dipstick unfortunately. There is a drain bolt towards the bottom for obviously letting the oil out but also a filling bolt up top for pouring the oil in. If you're just checking the level you need to remove the top bolt and pour oil in until it overflows, then retighten the nut. Make sure you use the correct oil as specified in your owner manual.
