Just collected a S3 petrol 2.25 which cranks but only fires when the key is released. er.. any idea's. Not had a petrol engine for years but remember the wirey things spark and bite..

Sounds like really DUFF points, AND probably needing a new capacitor.

Sparks occur when the points OPEN, that is when the current to to the coil is BROKEN suddenly by the points opening.

If this doesn't happen properly, you may get a nice big spark somewhere when YOU break the current flow to the coil by turning it off by the key.

A good check ....

Take off the distributor cap, and with IGN OFF turn the engine till to points are CLOSED. Make sure they are closed.

Now take the king lead out of the distributor cap (leave the other end in the coil) and wedge it somewhere with the loose end about a quarter inch from the body or the block.

Now, using a small plastic handled screwdriver - OPEN the points gap.

It should shoot a bloody big blue spark off the end of the king lead with a good loud "CRACK".

If it doesn't, fix it.

Another way to check for a good fat spark is to get a friend to hold the end of the king lead while you flick open the points ...

Is it a conversion job? It sounds as if it has a diesel “ignition” switch, they kill all circuits except the starter when cranking.

don't know if its ex-diesel but i'd not considered that, good tip, but as for getting a mate to hold the king lead.. HER foot shot out and kicked me in the uj's...

Can we assume you have had this engine running in the Landy?
Or is it a newly installed conversion?
