Hi,

The Power steering on the discovery we bought for our Morocco trip has had a sudden PAS failure. the steering works fine but is not powered. There are no unusall noises and the oil level is good and hasnt moved. We know the guy we got it from and there have been no prior problems with it. The only thing is a loud squeeking noise (EEEKEKEKEEEKEKEKEKEEE) from one of the belt auxilerys, possibly PAS pump, but not certain. It is a 300tdi with a serpantine belt, ive not even been able to find where the pump is yet!

Could this be a pump failure? What else could cause this, does anyone know of any common faults, or has anyone had this problem? Finaly, is it dangerous to drive like this, could the steering be locked up by dodgey PAS hydraulics?

Its suposed to be on the Portsmouth - Bilbao ferry this friday evening!

Thanks, Rich.

Hi Rich, great timing eh?!!!

Get in the engine bay and check the serpentine belt that drives the pas pump, alternator and other bits to see if the belt is intact.

Using the belt tensioner take the belt off and check the pas pump to see if it turns ok. Check the fluid level in the fluid header tank (black plastic round thing).

Check the pipes between the pump and the steering box to see if they are intact.

Lubricate the u/j's on the steering rod (bar between the steering wheel and the steering box.

My guess is that it will be something easy to fix - like a pas pump, new ones from Paddocks cost £65+vat.
