I have cured the whine on my 2002 P38 vogue se.
So it is about time I shared the results.
See my previous post – http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/2002-p38-whine-121638.html
I first thought it was the Auto Box because the sound appeared to come from the bell housing so I changed the box +torque convertor with second hand one from an early 4.6 which has a much larger torque convertor. A few notes on this modification:- 1) You have to change the gearbox and convertor because the output shaft is different. 2) The bell housing is the same but some the hole positions are different but you can modify it with some accurate drilling or swap them over. 3) I think the gearbox electrical connector could be different on early cars, mine was the same. 4) The shims will need to be altered behind the drive plate to get the correct clearance on the torque convertor, mine ended up at 3.2mm. Also thanks to Ashcroft Transmissions for their advice on fitting the early gearbox.
After all this work the whine was still the same! but I do prefer the larger torque convertor. The car pulls much better and the revs stay a lot lower.
Although the sound still seemed to be from the bell housing I then changed the transfer box for a second hand one. Result = cured :)
So the transfer box can whine but the bell housing is the sounding board for all transmission noises.
All good?, not yet I still have a vibration to cure, I will put that in another post.
