Hi,

I need to change the oil in my '96 P38a manual gearbox and so far have used MTF as this is what LR use - so I'm told. It has been suggested to me by an independent LR garage to use ATF (i.e. same fluid as for transfer box) in the gearbox - 'its better for the bearings' I was told. Does anyone use ATF in the gearbox? Just wondered what folks thoughts were on this.

To answer my own question (and for anyone else that's interested) just spoken to the local LR garage and they recommend using ATF in the main gearbox rather than MTF.

Just to be my controversial self, if thats the case how come the workshop manual says to use...

Texaco MTF 94

I only replied to this thread as I remember Josh asking this question a few weeks ago and I just quoted what was written in the workshop manual.

Hi,

I've always used MTF so far as that was what the manual says but according to the service engineer at LR the gearchange is better if you use ATF. He commented that MTF is semi-synthetic and supposed to be better but in reality ATF is the better oil.

Well the dealers and the owners manual both say use ATF
IIRC I seem to remember reading somewhere a while ago that the workshop manual had a mistake in it regarding what oil to use..............or it may have been the Haynes manual....................or I may have had a dream about the whole thing and just made that up..................
