Hello to all you good people . I loss drive yesterday in my 1998 dse auto , I have a little drive in reverse but not much , there was no warning on the dash and aa man said check fluid level . Next day topped up fluid just over 1lt hoping it would work put the plug back in and no change having a look around at the wires and one was cut so put it back on and now have gearbox fault on the dash . Where before I would get a little clonk when changing gear it doesn't now , it's like it's not going in to gear right . Can anyone help .been trying to find a mobile diagnostic around the colchester sudbury area but not having much luck ....... Is it new gearbox or transfer box time or could it be something else ?

It looks like it goes to a sensor near the bottom it has 2 wires that push on , all the other wires look ok and don't think the wire could hit anything

Did you check the fluid level per the book, i.e. box cold, engine idling, move gear lever through all positions?
Otherwise I suggest you get the fault codes read.
It's probably a clutch pack that has failed, James Martin is your man.

no just you mr beasty,i think someone others might think worse,id check oil colour which will be more than likely black first, no forward drive could be free whee but reverse would have to be clutch pack ,both symptoms could be clutch pack A and B ,which dont require much to fix as both are behind bell housing and dont require full strip down but reverse can also be the rear most clutch pack which does

Oil is dark . Do you know of anywhere good to take it for them to have a look and fix around sudbury Colchester area . Would it tell me if I got the fault code read ?
Thanks for your help

no not specifically ,computer only knows if solenoids arent working in box, dont know of anyone around there or many that will look and fix most just bung a recon in ,i allways look first as many can be repaired as good as recon without too much work but you dont know till you look unlike manual boxes in then where you know recon is best bet autos are different in that they dont wear quick ,parts just bust

Booked it into Suffolk auto transmission , getting picked up tomorrow . Let's hope the bill doesn't keep going up and up . I'll update to what the problem is and Hopfuly was when I know ..... It may help others

Yes please keep us posted and good luck.

Just had a phone call from the garage and they have told me that the sprockets in the back of the gearbox are in bits and need a new gearbox and transfer box . I have heard that they are very trusted so have told them to go ahead.
To anyone who might know does this sound right ?

there aint any sprockets in gear box but there are two in t/box so heavy duty ive never seen one damaged, and we used to do all lrs warrenty borgwarner boxes, very rare for both boxs to fail id ask for more info on both,

Think someone is trying to sell two new components James. Maybe the specialists just specialise in replacement units.

i know of just a firm near me just charged someone who had lost drive £1400 to fit another t/box and vehicle still doesnt drive, i think your right

Good money if you can get away with it James. Too many firms like that around today. Anybody can fit an exchange unit, when it doesn't work they have not got a bloody clue why.

When I was ringing round I was told that this garage was the place to go as there were only 3 places near me and I had heard good things about the head man there . I hope I'm not being ripped off , guess it's to late now .....
