On the front of a viscous fan ,theres a small spring , looks like a ,wee snail shell ,thats what controls the amount of fluid that enters the drag bit of the fan center ,It expands n contracts opening and closing a valve that controls fan speed depending on air temp ,the fan will never reach 100 percent engine speed ,think max is 80% or it would explode ,,if the thermal spring rusts or rots away no more cooling... happy Easter all ...Fascinating really, the dynamics of a cooling system. @RangeRoller dt I did not know the viscous engaged incrementally, that's really interesting.

its not wired into the car, it was plugged in while the engine was idling so i could set the thermostat controller for the fan.Thanks for the description DubbleRR.
Iveco's fitted with the 2.8 engine sometimes have an engine fan that's activated with an electric clutch. That's a very interesting solution; The power of an engine driven fan, with some control over what it does.
Mark Piercy hi, I have a nanocom, I built this plate to support it yesterday, its not painted yet, going to finish it today.
Can I ask how you have your nanocom set to come on please, you have it wired to the key?
Was thinking about adding a switch to the 12V+ line of the obd port, below

its an interstinfg solution Mark, I like it more than piercing the hose with one of those lances.
few things today. Im relocating the oil cooler, I have a spares car so busy making a bracket for the spare trans cooler I have.

More relevant to this thread; I took the manifold off my 2001 P38 diesel spares car, to have a look-see at what sensors there are.
There are only two, there is no third sensor on this late model diesel. I stared and stared at it, I can not see another.

I want to add a switch to the ECU sensor that tells the aircon fans to come on over 100°C - I think thats the green connector?
When I'm driving up the mountain, I'll turn the aircon fans on all the time.
97 on the nano, I can't push the sensor in any further as there is the oil cooler in front of the rad. It works well and has done for 4yrs so far
that's pretty cool, the only concern I had was finding a sensor that was the correct thread and temp setting.Have you considered one of these for the sensor to go in?

T'is, later ones have a black sensor where the blanking plug is to switch the a/c fans on if it gets hot.That looks like an early engine with the gaskets on the manifold faces?
