P38 Brake pump failure

Hello All,
I had a brake pump failure on my P38 a couple of days ago and I was just wondering if the accumilator as well as the pump is broken. Prior to failure, the pump was making a sort of sucking noise which continued while the engine was off. It also made the same noise while driving, but not all the time. Brakes were fine for about 100 miles before failing.
I also noticed something which might have contributed to the failure, so if anyone is a real tech expert I'd like an opinion on this...
Firstly, I,ve had very little use of my Rangie over the last few months (since MOT). It was MOT'd a couple of months ago and it needed new brake lines to pass. The garage carried out the work and the Rangie passed. But I noticed yesterday that they filled the brake fluid well above the max marker - to the top of the reservoir in fact. I'll not be able to do anything about it now, but if this could have contributed to the failure, then I will complain and never go back to that garage! It seems like a no brainer of a mistake to make from a place that have a reputation for repairing Land Rovers and should have noticed this.
 
Fluid will be high until accumulator is filled by pump, with engine running it should then sit at or just below MAX level. If fluid level was much above MAX level with engine running system primed, fluid would be expelled when engine was switched off. Think your system needs bleeding. Bleeding this system is not the same as normal bleeding, it must be done in the correct sequence. Air in pump will cause it to cavitate. That can damage the pump.
 
can anyone help i have a p38 diesel rr but when im driving my brake peddle goes from normal to hard and the brakes fail let my foot off then put back on their fine has anyone got any ideas cheers richard

Failure comes in many forms with the Wabco ABS units. The valves in my ABS booster unit failed, and as a result, brake fluid overflowed from the brake fluid reservoir a few hours after the vehicle had been stopped.
 
Why not just replace it all for a tested working second hand pump?

You can pick up a scrapper unit for the price of a new accumulator? Yeah you may end up with 2 duff accumulators but sell a pump unit on then to pay for a new one?

Even better pressure test your system.
