Hi, I have mentioned in another thread that I have a leak somewhere when under full boost and accelleration, and only then a couple of times. My question is, how many pipes under the bonnet could the leak be coming from, do I have to replace all of them, would it be easy to do myself, would a stealer charge lots and is there a quick way of finding out which one is cream crackered?

As it is only on full boost I am not too worried as never drive like that, but worried it might affect other performance and consumption factors.

Help as always is greatly appreciated.

Milo

Hi guys, this leak is getting worse I think.....eeek. Making the whoosing noise every now and then, mainly when just pulling off. I am going to put her into my local specialist on Thursday but want to know how many pipes are going to need replacing if I have to do all the hoses that carry air to and from the turbo and what that should cost me, it is only air pipes so fitting should be cheapish. Could anything else be causing this noise?

Help is greatly appreciated!!! PLEASE!!!!

There are three main hoses.

One from the air filter link (that big thing across the top of the engine!) to the front of the turbo, one from the turbo to the intercooler, one from the intercooler to the inlet manifold.

It is not going to be the air filter hose as that is not under pressure, so will be one of the other two hoses.

They are pre-formed hoses, so will not be dirt cheap, but won't be expensive either. You could fit both yourself within about 10 minutes as they are only held on with jubilee clips.

That is assuming it is the hoses! Just take them off and inspect, won't take long.

Matt.

Cheers for this , I will get the specialist to replace both anyhow, as I am now running more boost it is best to have new, if they are not mega bucks then I can get them done.

Cheers matey

Found a small split on one of the hoses today and it had slid back off the pipe leading from the intercooler that must be the bugger, so slid it back on, tried to cover up the split until I can get the new pipe. Still going to replace the lot. Cheers though :)

This is exactly why it is great to have such a well informed forum!

Hi Matt, it was the front of the 2 pipes, it had a split on it and would not stay put, seemed to have been shortered?!?!  I have ordered a new one and pick it up on Saturday. There is nothing in it is there? Just air when running? Should just be a case of undooing the jubilee clips, sliding the old one off and the new one on right?

aaahhhhhhh!!

Also - you have a DSE with high mileage, do you get a lot of smoke when accellerating at night with a cars lights behind you? Maybe that just makes it worse, cannot see anything during the daylight? This is my first diesel, should I worry. Could be the leaking air pipe I guess too?!

ALSO!!....

Do you know anything about tracking on a RR? Kwik Fit suggest it is a main dealer only thing............aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Yep, exactly right. I was going to suggest shortening the pipe to you, but wasn't sure how much slack you had.

Again, exactly right! Just how mine is - and how my 525TDS was (same engine) IMHO it is quite a smokey diesel - though that is probably because it is an "old" design by modern standards.

Kwik Fit - what the hell are you doing going to that place? They wouldn't know the arse end of a car if it bit them. Take it to somewhere decent. I' not saying it isn't a main dealer (or specialist) only job, but I certainly wouldn'y take the word of Krap Fit.
~Incidently, my local Kwik Fit a few years back was in serious trouble with trading standards for telling people work needed doing when it didn't!

Cheers Matt, appreciate it. Hopefully it will improve the smoking situation, it is not too bad and only under full accelleration. I will see what I can do with the pipe and will let all know the results!

Hi,
I've noticed the smoke in the headlights at night as well, if you really put your foot down I've even had cars back off :) . My RR is a 95DT Manual with 100k, it's also my first deisel and it's quite comforting to see many asking the same questions, in other words 'they all do it' so there's not much to worry about .... I hope.
