Any advice would be appreciated

Compression test will tell you if HG gone.
Might be thermostat or may be that rad is silted up and needs flushed or replaced.
Have a good search on here as there are a few other things that may be contributing to your coolant loss.
I had a panic moment last week when my top rad hose burst - thoughts of HG failue and slipped liners had me in a right huff. Compression test showed that no HGF so have replaced rad, pump and thermostat and she is now running at a nice and steady temp. I was kicking myself for not ordering a full set of hoses though as I should really have replaced all of them as well.

little tip I was given

Check the breather pipe from the top of the rad (top left as you look from the front) to the overflow is flowing, quick check showed to me by mechanic is it will be hot at both ends if its flowing, if not that could be blocked airlocking the rad, quicker than taking the stat off and having to replace all the coolant.
