I have just spent my hard earned on a P38 and been stung:(, however onwards and upwards.
I have a bad leak from the injector pump, after visiting my local 4x4 specialist they tell me it needs to be stripped out and dealt with by a garage with the test gear to be able to set it back up again, he recommends Johnstone and Drynan in Kilmarnock, is this going to cost a lot.
Can i buy a full unit and replace myself.

Thanks in advance.

If you can get your hands on the special tools and are handy with spanner and can use a dti guage then go ahead and have a go if you get it wrong it will cost you more

Expect a recon pump to be £600+ plus plus labour if you get garage to fit

Mine cost me £600 at mates rate for the pump and fitted myself

Thanks for that scary info :( lol
Well I'm just back from Johnstone and Drynan, The diesel mech cant see exactly where its coming from but his initial response is a new seal set and around 2hrs labour, here hopes its not worse.
so not suicidal yet, but still P'd off at being caught off guard, just hope I have no more surprises.

There are always more surprises with a P38, the only time to be really surprised is if you have no more surprises:rolleyes:

Thanks for that, Yes it seems I should have bought another Disco ;) but I fancied a change, I only need the big motor for pulling the tin tent around but being on a restricted budget I thought a P38 a good choice for an all rounder.

I also have noticed a vibration in the cab at stand still, more felt than heard, which I am currently scouring the threads for.

Any help would be appreciated.

Lots of threads about vibration. Worth checking the crank pulley/vibration damper, also the viscous fan for broken blades. You may just have to live with it.

I think I can live with it if need be, however I will do my best to look into all suggestions, it is not extreme and very faintly changes when i engage neutral (auto box).
fuel consumption was very fair on the trip to Kilmarnock on the dash comp (not calculating what is leaking) I managed to maintain 28-30mpg falling rapidly to low 20's in town.
got to admit I like the car and just hope its not a bag of bolts.

There are two out side gaskets that are prone to leaking both are of an oval shape you might just be lucky and it's one of those one is accessible in situ the other the unit must be removed. Wipe it all down and take a closer look.

The rogue that sold me it made a mess with silicone and it is masking the exact local of the leak, so I booked it in to a recommended garage, i did consider a swap unit but due to the tools required I chickened.

Just praying the bill don't choke me, at idle it appears to be around a drip or two per second from either a pipe nearer the block or from the join between the pump and the distribution block if you know the bit I mean.

with fuel consumption plus leak it cost me around £20 (based only on fuel gauge) approx in in 56 miles which is not too bad on reflection i think it puts it around 19mpg so I dont think its spraying under pressure any more on the drive

Diesel mech said something about gaskets and washers

If its a pipe injector pipe then that's good news,if its the front seal not so good take the dipstick out if it smells of diesel the the front shaft seal is gone and it's leaking into the oil not good,if they are a good honest company and it is just an external seal the damage won't be so bad around £ 300 if pump has to come off if it's a pipe or the accessible seal up to £ 100 good luck they are around £600 to referb plus labour to remove/fit a new pump is around £900 plus labour again

Well I am still enjoying the drive and even the look of the p38, and have the card at the ready for her visit to the workshop on Wed, I will no doubt have many questions and many hours browsing in the coming weeks and months.

Will need to see if i can remember how to put pics up ;-)
