Another problem I have inherited is that the 2.5DSE 1998 overheats when under load It will idle all day no problems but 20 miles up the motorway the temperature guage suddenly zooms to red and power goes. I have tried just cruising at 30mph on the motorway and no problems. The header tank is under pressure and obviously on loosening the cap water is expelled. I have tried a new thermostat but no improvement. I notice that I can in fact stop the fan blade turning with a rolled up newspaper could this be at fault? Or maybe water pump I have read that these are brittle if so anybody got step by step instructions to remove/replace.
Am beginning to wish I had not bought this but at £2000.00 I thought I had a bargain as it is very clean.

Get yourself to a site called GREENOVAL and download RAVE. That is the manual for Range Rovers.

Viscous fans are designed to turn 'in anger' when the viscous liquid in the hub gets hot. When cold you can stop therm. However I've run my diesel Rangie without a fan fitted in an emergency so I'd suggest you start somewhere else, like the rad.

Fan is obviously NBG if you can stop it like that when hot. I would also look at the water pump, they are plastic and fail. Don't keep overheating it, if the head is not already cracked, it soon will be.

am confident that the head is ok as there is no loss of water/oil or mixing and no smell in the coolant. each time the temp guage has gone into red i have stopped. I just cant understand what is wrong here so will try the water pump change. It is so strange that it is fine unless under load. The radiator is clear am thinking it may be the fan.
Any other advice greatly appreciated.
The Rave CD is proving difficult to download does any body have advice on the water pump removal and is it a big job?

While you are at it, check the RAD. you will see that, unusually both hoses go in at the top. For the rad to work there is a centre baffle in the rad header. If that fails the hot water goes straight across the top instead of down one side and up the other. Do the marble test, with the rad off, drop a marble or small stone in one hose entry, tilt the rad and see if it will come out the other side. If it does the rad is shagged. That was the problem on the spares dog I bought that was supposed to have a cracked head:D

i there water pump is a esiy job to do just tack the fan of and the belt of the front and you will see the pump bolts 10mm .but i had the same probelam and it ended up been the head just dowing mine .just got diesel timing to do then it is finished if you send me a privet mesige i will send you a copy of the rave cd i yoused

will do mark i intend to strip it down this weekend. I know that it is not the thermostat as i have changed that (AA thought this was the problem) They also pressure tested the system and said the head was not leaking so fingers crossed the water pump is to blame. i really hope so because it is a nice truck. thanks for all your help I will keep you posted John

What make of thermostat did you fit? There have been a few peeps had new stats that are duff, not ****part by any chance? Test in a pan of boiling water to see if it opens fully.
