Can anyone help please? I have recently put a 200 TDI (Disco) in my 65 Series2 since i have it has been getting hot :( I have upgraded the Fan an had no trouble with the 225 Diesel lump i had in before The only thing i havent put on is the intercooler as i was told i didnt need it. Can this be causing the trouble?

what gauge/sender combo are you using ?

are you accurately measuring the temp or watching the gauge ?

is top hose hot proving thermostat open ,is rad hot all over core proving its all right are you sure its over heating and not just mis match between guage and sender

My s2 runs a 200tdi with the std very early narrow flat top rad and runs at 75/80 degrees all the time very rarely going over 80 when tying to break the land speed record.
Are you going by the gauge or any other device?
Best gauge is a Tim cappiliary type 20 quid e bay.

Ive just swapped my stat housing for the std metal series type so i can use the std top hose, and noticed the stat is just a plain normal stat rated at 82 degc, not the proper 200tdi stat with the bypass plunger, this i have just fitted as well so will report back as to running temperature.

I have removed the thermostat completely I am using the standard series gauge with a Steve Parker conversion with fan in full it runs at half temperature but as soon as i start to climb any sort of hill and give it some gas it goes up to three quarters until i back off. I recon the gauge is working properly as if it gets much higher it does start to spit water out the rad cap:confused:

Well running without a stat means not all the coolant is going to the radiator, so first test would be to fit on
Yesterday i tried the proper tdi one with the bypass plunger and it ran to near 90degc for my liking and went over 90 when worked hard.
I also noticed it chucked water out of the rad cap.
So last night back to the std cheap stat and its now running at 75/80 all the time just like it was before.
Only goes over 80 when thrashing the pants of it or flat out up really long hills.

Havent a clue as it came fitted to the engine when i bought it.
if you have the original tdi stat just take it to a motor factors and ask for one the same size but without the plunger affair on the bottom.
Looked just like this one but obviously im not sure if this is the right size

That is what my original one looks like some one suggested that my Rad might be gunged up? I had no problem with my 225Diesel but i am trying to source a reasonably priced series Rad to give it a try. But i will try and get a new stat and try that too

If you've kept the turbo on, then ideally you need the i/c, Also the disco rad (maybe defender?) would be a better bet as it has an oil cooler built into it - turbos generate lots of heat!

I don't even have a temperature sender on mine, or a fan.. it's a case of guessing really on it

Of course it could also be the head gasket on its way out.
Head pretty easy too pull certainly no harder than a std series diesel head.
Meant to say im not running the oil cooler either, but am running the intercooler.

I do have an oil cooler on taken from an Astra diesel of all things but that doesnt get warm at all

Theres a oil thermostat in the oil filter head, this is why i didnt bother with one on mine as the s2 weighs 400kgs less plus only has to drive 2 wheels, so is going to get a lot easier life.

If you look at a lot of the series motors for sale with a tdi fitted quite a lot dont have the i/c fitted again i reckon you can get away with it.

Mine 200tdi series 3 was straight out of a Disco unchanged but I did put in a new radiator (discovery radiator) and it doesn't even make it to half way up the scale even at 70 on the motorway.
