I've found a BOAT near my workplace... visit Ordnance Survey Leisure getamap, sign in as "Guest", at the top-left click "Leisure" and search for "TL464636".

I thought this might be worth a try at lunchtime, so I stuck it into Google Maps... here is the southern entrance:

Google Maps
(LOOK TO THE LEFT OF THE TRAVELLERS SITE ENTRANCE - IT LOOKS LIKE A FOOTPATH, BUT HAS GREEN BOLLARDS BLOCKING ENTRANCE TO VEHICLES)

Half way along it intersects with "Butt Lane". Going here and looking south we see:

Google Maps
(LOOK TO THE LEFT OF THE SURFACED ROAD - AT THE CLOSED GATE IN THE BUSHES)

If we turn around from this point and look north we get this:

Google Maps
(LOOK TO THE RIGHT OF THE UNBLOCKED ENTRANCE. THERE MAY BE A WAY THROUGH HERE, BUT I WOULD BE TRESPASSING ON SOMEBODY'S LAND ON MY WAY IN.)

Finally, the other end of this BOAT is at Punch Farm/Oldfield Farm:

(AT THIS POINT THERE IS AN OPEN GATE, BUT A "NO VEHICLES" SIGN!)

So... the question is... what has happened to this supposed "Byway Open to All Traffic"?!?

Does this happen a lot?

First Question..... is it on the Definative map at the council as a Byway open to all Trafic..... or is there a restriction... think the subject has been covered on Landyzone a fair few times.........

juste cause its on an OS map it does not mean you have the Right Of Way... or the fact that its on Trail wise.....

ah, ok... never been to trail wise... and now i understand that a BOAT isn't necessarily a Right of Way, it all makes sense.

As for the council maps, I have no idea, of course... and probably not worth finding out unless I can get together a load of other lanes to check at the same time!

Thanks for increasing my knowledge a little bit further!

the Definitive map is really the only way of finding out if your not a club member, the other place you can find out is your local Club Right of way Officer, or GLASS's area rep.

Also there are a few lanes ie single track roads that are marked on a map but even they dont give you a right of way.

By the way , if there are No TRO's and you do have the right of way the obstructions to the Lane, BOAT can be reported to the council and they should remove it.....

ok... thanks for the info!

I drove down a lane yesterday near cambridge... well, on ordnance survey it was a BOAT and in google maps, my road atlas and my TomTom it was a normal road. If I asked TomTom to get me from near one end to near the other end, it took me down that route. Most of it is like a farm track, but 100 yards or so is muddy and rutted.

There are also "NO TIPPING" signs at various points along the route, so is it a fairly safe assumption that this route is open, or do "roads" like this even need checking?

The travellers site bit might be a clue as to why its been blocked
