Which is best? Trying to decide where to put my spare wheel, its on the back door at the mo, but what, if any? are the benefits of having it on the bonnet?

benefits of having it on the bonnet are that your back door doesn't start bending over time. My back door is too knackered to hold the wheel nowadays. I haven't got the appropriate top plate to use my bonnet fitting yet, so I just keep my wheel inside, behind the seats.

Thanks for that, does it need the correct top plate for the bonnet or can i just take the one off the back door?

Depends how tall you are and how big your spare wheel is as you cant see through them... plonk it in the middle of you bonnet and see what you think. A spare wheel carrier that swings open with the back door will set you back £120 minimum.
Unless your rear door is straining.... if it aint bust, dont fix it.

What do you do with your landy, is it a defender as theyhad weaker bonnets than the 110, so have to be braced as well as have the carrier fitted.
Tyres over 265/75 r16 block your vision quite a bit , if you use it in supermarket car parks etc. Check inside the backdoor for tell tale cracks, and weld them and brace inside , they should be ok if used on road , corrugations do the damage. Having spare on bonnet helps the aerodynamics, if thats a concern . HTSH

rear swingaway fitted

try lifting your bonnet with a spare wheel on it its fookin heavy, not too mention ya cant see where ya goin..

There is an adapter that goes on the inside of your bonnet to brace it.
The other downside to wheel on bonnet is that some toll booths measure the height of the vehicle as it passes.... go through an automatic booth, and it recognises your car as a van, so you pay more. Can be a pain in the arse.

Plus, it makes your bonnet heavy to lift up!

Very true.

Its the first thing to junk when in competition. Even a tow ball on the x-member is better that a dixon bate plough or indeed LR own slightly smaller plough. Still amazes me people still try and trial competitivly and do serious comps with them still fitted.

My 80 inch has been trialed for years and years even comped but somone has a small drop plate fitted for a removable tow hitch. Needless to say its now been replaced with a tow ball thats level with the x-member. The ammount of mud buried in between it they must have been stuck on it a fair few times.

Ask Spyderman or Carpy I got halted slightly at our local pay and play off a cliff into some water my spare wheel was hung up for a few seconds on my spare wheel swingaway. It actually took the full weight of the back of the mota so I can confirm they are quite strong with no body damage where it mounted which was great!

It was quite extreme enough for Spyderman to say no ta' (which is quite rare).

Anyways It showed up a couple of tricked up motors that had been struggling to get back up the cliff where it wasn't quite so steep for at least 15 minutes. All lockered up Simex tyres, full external cage everything you can buy but any sense. I said to Spyderman lets have some fun I drove off the cliff Slightly halted by the rear tyre holding me back, then drove past them and back up the cliff that that had been trying to do for the last 15/20 mins. Got a clap and then they buggered off.
