Morning All.

I had my Old Freelander MOTed on Wed and I was quite pleased, just two advisories front pads and one track rod end, but since then it's been making a odd whistling noise.

I can vary the sound in intensity and pitch even making it go away but playing with/pressing the brake pedal so I think it is something to do with the brakes or servo system.

The brakes and all other systems seem to be working normality and it's going back in of Monday but I'd appreciate an idea of what may have gone wrong before it gets to the garage.

Many Thanks aamcle

Might be :
.. according to google .. some brake pads have inbuilt small pieces of metal attached to the brake pad to act as a warning indicator when the brake pads need replaced .. n' make a chirping or whistling noise

I forgot to mention that the whistle continues for a few seconds after the car is stoped and the engine is off.

Its a vacuum leak at the servo where the pushrod goes into the servo itself. Mine has started doing it too. I have not had the time to investigate, but a new seal is a likely cure. It will be quite labour intensive though as I would guess the servo will need to come off to get access.

Its not life threatening, but needs fixed quickly as at some point the seal could fail completely and you would loose vacuum assistance on the brakes; ie they would still work but take a lot of effort on the pedal to stop the car.

oh .. ;-)

in that case .. it be reminiscent of the 'dying duck' noise ..
'n that's related to the EGR gizmo .. i.e. its vacuum solenoid ..
( when an egr bypass/delete has been installed and the vacuum hose blocked off )
so .. Maybe you've got a small vacuum leak somewhere along the hoses
or one of the vacuum solenoids ..
