Popped out to the shops today in our p38 4.6, by the time I got there the old girl had overheated and sprayed oil all over the engine bay, lost all coolant, lost all power started knocking and misfiring.

So what do we reckon? Head gasket? Liners? Cracked block? Or something else?

Thanks

I am beginning to think things might not all be doom and gloom,

After calming down and leaving the RR alone for a few days I went to have a look at the old girl I found a hose that had blown off around the lpg system. I put that back on and cleaned the engine bay up a bit there seemed to be a lot less oil than I thought originally.

I put 5 liters of water into the header tank and started her up and she was running smoothly and quietly so off I went for a gentle drive I managed maybe a mile before the temp started climbing and the knocking started again. So I gently removed the header cap and topped up the water and went back home.

Today I thought I would have another look for any signs of leaks I topped up with water again and went for a drive gauge sat perfectly in the middle all the time. I can only do 30mph max in Gib but did that for a mile in 1st gear and it refused to overheat. Top hose is hot and can squeeze it and the radiator is hot all over.

Might I be being too hopeful?

Try climbing a hill and see if it's still OK.

Went up the steepest longest hill and it stays bang on in the middle and I see no water loss from the expansion tank. There is a slight knock in start up but quickly seems to settle down.

Todays events have me fearing the worst again. After a short drive then stopping just as I was about to walk away after parking I heard a hose pop off and then all the coolant proceded to drain onto the floor.

I reconnected the hose and attempted to top up the coolant started the engine abd the coolant all gushed out of the expansion tank.

So I am thinking slipped liner now. Anyone think differently?

You need a sniff test on the coolant, could just be HGF.

Air in the system from somewhere. Easy to tell with a static test rig.

Well not knowing the p38 too well ey wammers but the engine well, I would say not to be the man of doom and gloom

Check your hole at the top of the rad the small pipe going back to the top of the header this is the bleed and if blocked will cause preasue issues use a cocktail stick

Fill her up with coolant etc try and keep the front of the car higher than the rear ie don't fill it facing down hill

When water comes out of the small nipple on the top of the rad as you filling then it's nearly there

Put the pipe back on then most importantly the header tank cap nice a tight

Start her up let her warm up keep an I eye on the temp the pressure will force a full system bleed

If she's still blowing hoses after that your in the **** and a snif test will confirm, you can't run these v8s without the header tank cap on the just explode the cooling system does run a bit of pressure but I would say after a good hard drive the top hose will be firm but not like a car tyre more like the bit of muscle between your forefinger and thumb

The knocking well that sound like trouble looming
