oil leaks on my drive

have had my discovery 300tdi now for about a month and my drive is now covered in oil spots n r lass is making me ears bleed wi all nagging :blabla::blabla:

is it possible to make disco gas n oil tight or is this a part of ownership

Get used to it....if it stops dripping you know you have run out of oil

it could be worse mine drips on the nicly painted garage floor

No you can make them oil/water tight however it can be a labour of love. Common leaks are gearbox/transfer box so the cost may not be high for a couple of seals buy the work is considerable and without guarantee.

Steering boxes can try the patience of a saint but it can be done, next up rocker cover gasket, or sump, and sometimes the oil cooler pipes can be a bit damp, the lift pump gasket (and even the pump) can leave a drip here and there. Even the swivel oil can be replaced with 'one shot' grease helping out the tired swivel seals.

Coolant leaks are the same as any other car but the 300tdi has a second gasket behind the water pump (P gasket) and can be a pain.

Work out the area where the leaks are coming from and try to deal with them in an order that suits your finances at the time, it can be done but you must persevere.

thats what im reckoning is it worth time n effort, just keep topping levels up AND keep parking on same spot :blabla::blabla::blabla::blabla::blabla::blabla::blabla::blabla:

its just marking it territory

why not try a drip tray... you could make one with some tarp and a bit of batten for a frame.

alternatively a thin layer of sand on the drive.

or get rid of the wife ! that way she cant nag you about the oil spots then...

lol mines on the patio living in the sticks has its downsides no concrete just mud so the patio is mine till i finish the workshop

mine leaks too, the in laws are nightmares, i actually have found myself outside with a very stiff brush a big bottle of fairy liquid and loads of boiling water and then the hose! You have to wiegh up the moaning/mess/regular top ups against the cost of fixing such a problem, for me its easier to put the odd litre in and spend 30 mins cleaning the floor every 2 months than it is to rectify the problem.

my 300Tdi left a big oil patch on the block paving that no amount of scrubbing with detergent could shift, but a year after selling it you can hardly see it- all evaporated. The TD5 parks on the other side of the drive and is busily making a new patch.

Its part of the charm- although I used to have a 200Tdi 90 that never left a drop right up to 100K when I sold it- that car was amazing though, its temp needle used to get up to warm and stay there whatever I did even motorway in 2003 in France at 45 deg C. (or 55 deg C on the inside of the cab!!!)

Try a tin of WYNNS auto gearbox stop leak (nothing else is as good IMHO), just a tablespoonful in the steering box and the rest in the autobox, should hold it back for awhile. Note: It take a few days to start working by softening the oil seals and allowing them to expand a little.

if you want to get rid of oil off your drive try vanish washing power works very good, Me on the other hand I have chipping on my drive so I park the car in the same spot and when there is a big oil patch I get the shovel and scoop them up and put them in the bin and put more in its place until they are coverd

the missis cant give you earache job done

so ive decided

gonna get underneath n give it good clean to see where leaks are
top up all levels adding wynns checking again in 6 months to see if owt wants doing
will keep parking in drive but will try giving it a scrub :blabla::blabla::blabla:
and get rid of bleeding wife :ballchain:

my old 300 tdi used to do this(it was only 4 years old at the time with 25k) and i took it to landrover-who said 'it's aland rover'just get used to it.

As ive just brought a 300tdi,parked at work just noticed its first oil leak.i'm no mechanic and its coming from half way back beyond the gearbox but before the rear axle from a round circular horizonal drum part about 10 inch big.any thoughts to you professionals!!please be kind.

most likely rear output seal ,you would need to remove hand brake drum to be sure
