Evening folks.

I have a somewhat odd issue with my 03 TD4. About a week ago I noticed that it was very lumpy when I accelerated and there was an occasional tinny clinking noise coming from the underside. It has gotten much worse in the past 48 hours and I am taking it to my mechanic on Saturday morning.

At first I thought it was an exhaust issue, but when I filled up last night I noticed that the problem reduces. Could it be a pump failing?

It's a very unique sound and it sounds like it is coming from underneath the middle of the car.

It only happens under acceleration in gear.

Thanks

God hes expensive paid 44 quid for OEM under arch pump for TD4 and when my L series intank pump went 18 months ago that was 55 both of flea bay free delivery.

I didn't think the L Series had a pump in the tank - thought it had the hand primer to get fuel through the system and then the main pump on the engine did all the work.

*UPDATE*

Been to the mechanic today. He says that it's an engine knock. He can't pinpoint the cause. He thinks it's either a faulty injector or a faulty HP pump.

Is there any way to narrow it down as I replaced 2 injectors last summer and I don't really want to buy something I don't need with money I don't really have.

I am fairly sure the fuel rail pressure can be read with a a proper code reader

some times when you buy cheep fuel you will get engine knock but a tinkling may well be baffles in the exhaust or even the out cover on the exhaust.

Taking it to my mechanic today.

When driving at pretty much any revs the pinking noise sounds like a tin can being kicked along the road and when i increase the revs there is a cloud of black smoke from the exhaust. He thinks it's either a faulty hp pump or a misfiring injector. Getting a leakback test done today.

Is there anything else it could be?

What worries me is that clinky noise means low fuel and black smoke means too much fuel

Horrible feeling piston may have gone or crank bearing...

Get ready for bad news
