Hi New to this forum,

need some pointers please. Got two Discos one 2001, one 2003 both 2.5 diesels. Both recent purchases both aggro:(
I live in spain so getting parts at reasonable prices isn't easy so trying to determine fairly accurately causes of a couple of issues before ordering parts from uk most likely on eBay as number of people offer european shipping on there.

First issue. 2003 :When off of the accelerator (going down hills or on the flat) and coasting for a few seconds about one in every 20 times when braking results in them feeling like the servo is not assisting (hit someone up arse on flat ground the other day, they were not impressed and got fair bit of spanish abuse!!) does brake but having to depress hard, as I say as if no servo assist. If going from accelerating and braking no issues at all. Just read on a thread that a vacuum is run off the alternator. I have been getting a lot of belt squeezing on start up from what appears to be alternator (didn't inspect fully) on top right hand side of engine, could this be my issue. Is that alternator or new axially belt if so?

Second issue 2003:When cornering mainly on left side getting clunking noise sounds like wheel bearing/hub. if traveling slowly in straight line and moving steering wheel left to right sounds like fair bit of play and resulting knock. How do I check for bearing/hub play and is this new hubs or is bearing change fairly straight forward and is it possible that the need tightening up?
May or may not be related but I took front prop off last week and changed yokes/uj's as they were completely F**^ed and marked it prior and put the rear double cardon end on first with marks correct but as was working in pit and couldn't get front up to allow front diff to turn couldn't line up front of prop on marks so guess it is 180 degrees out on the front (mention this as don't know if this would make much difference). Have to say made vast improvement but then there were no roller bearings and yoke was completely boned in one of the ones changed in double cardon, what a job that was!!!

Issue with 2001
under heavy acceleration, it pulses like kick down kicks in but goes off again, similar to sensation received when hitting rev limiter in a sports car. This happened in the 2003 and after disconnecting air box sensor and re connecting when that didn't solve it and then disconnecting MAF sensor problem stopped, so got new MAF sensor on that problem solved. So tried same on the 2001 but still surges/pulsates with MAF disconnected, sop don't want to go getting new MAF if that isn't the problem.

Sorry there is a lot I need help with on my first post but I am currently car less and in the middle of nowhere having moved here just two months ago and it will take two weeks once I have ascertained what parts I need to order for them to get here, as post is dog Sh1yte.......... still the weather is good :)[/B]

Hi,
for the brake issue you must check for vacuum leaks along the pipes, the vacuum pump is tigether with the alternator on the same pulley so if it was due to the belt you should have got charging issues too IMO

for the second one there could be many things but if it's about clunking the hubs are the last suspects as they are sealed, you can't access the bearing... you have to suspend the front on axle stands and check for plays all around... for what you say a drag link end or ball joint sounds more suspect

for the 2001 could be a wastegate modulator issue or sticking wastegate or many other things but for these kind of things it's a bit feckless to work without a tester... is the EGR still on?

thanks for those pointers, will get it in the air today and see. think it will be worth ordering waste gate modulator for the sake of £20 and see if that solves issue. also found the intercooler hoses have gone internally (ballooned) so that may be closing air to turbo. So will be ordering some silicone ones to replace. going to do both vehicles to be on safe side.

Also got a leak on power steering pipe from reservoir, looks to be at the union. How much pressure is there here, wanting to know if I can cut and replace the hose and use jubilee clips?

if it's attached to metal it's the return pipe from the box, no pressure in it, just the return flow, it's that pipe which has that nr 2 o-ring fitted Allbrit.de - Ersatzteile für LAND ROVER & MG ROVER , no worries you can fix it with what you want as long as it doesnt leak

Been ill so not been on for couple of days.
There are two pipes from the reservoir for the power steering side and it is the thinner of the two pipes which starts in rubber then joins via a pressed union to the metal pipe which is leaking at the union. I want to know if I cut off the union and join the rubber pipe to the metal pipe with a jubilee clip that it isn't under loads of pressure to blow it off please?
