Hi guys

Got a freelander 2002 1.8 3 door. 115,000 miles. Runs fine but seems to really struggle up hills and end up in 2nd gear still struggling. Sits lovely at 70mph on the M4 so just seems a little strange to struggle like it does.

Is this normal? I know its not like a normal car so maybe just need to get used to it

No Idea mate only got it last week ill change them see if it does anything. Fuel filter is difficult isnt it?
 
Check if any of your brakes are binding. A binding brake (Drum or disc) can take a surprising amount of power away. The 1.8 can be a little underpowered as mentioned.

Fuel filter isn't difficult to do, so dont be phased by the idea. But i would replace the plugs and air filter and give it a going over before pulling the filter out. Especially if it's running smoothly.

No, it's easy.. Just buy a genuine filter not a cheapo one (as I did originally).

Fold down rear seats, undo carpet clips and pull back, undo inspection cover with crosshead screwdriver.

Unplug loom and run engine until it stalls - remove battery negative lead

Unplug fuel line

mark locking ring position - Undo locking ring anti-clockwise by using a flat head screwdriver and a small hammer - don't hit too hard.

Pull filter out gently, sender float assembly is a little flimsy at the bottom so be careful

cover up big hole that is now in your fuel tank with a plastic bag or something

Pull off 4 electrical terminals at the top of the pump

remove sender by pushing the locking clip at the bottom and pushing the assembly up

Undo 3 plastic clips holding on top of pump and remove gently, retain spring and be careful of the hose that will remain attached.

Undo 3 clips holding fuel filter in place (I found this the hardest bit) and remove - retain small spring

lube new o-rings with silicone grease or clean engine oil. pop on the ends of the pipes and make sure you get them the right way round - use spacers provided if your pump has them

Lower new filter onto the pipes and gently click into place - remember to put the small spring back. The filter should fit nicely into place and be clicked securely on all clips, if not it will not work properly

replace spring and click top of pump back into place, it should spring smoothly up and down on the new filter

replace sender and reconnect 4 electrical terminals

if supplied or needed, replace rubber pump sealing ring

lower the pump gently back into the fuel tank, it will only locate 1 way

push down on the pump really hard and start to tighten up the locking ring by hand, then proceed to tighten using screwdriver and hammer method - line up marking points you made earlier

connect loom and fuel line

reconnect battery negative

test car starts and runs before putting everything back together!!

Job done, have a beer....

This is how I did it, may have missed something...

The proper LR tool for removing the locking ring is about £90, screwdriver and hammer method works if you're careful..

MOST IMPORTANTLY - remember Longbolt's username as he helped me greatly.....

Just had a look and I think the bloke has had my pants down as there is no prop shaft? running to the back :( Think I have a 2 wd 4x4 grrrr
 
Private, my own fault rushed in to it and never had a landy before but got it cheap. Only started looking at the research after I bought it.

Think it will go on gumtree or fleabay and Ill look for another, shame as its a really nice motor

Well, don't give up on it just yet. Summers coming, so you don't really need 4x4 at the mo. Prop shafts can be got off e-bay etc, and you have all summer to sort it out. If you get a prop, and there are other complications, then fire it off.

Just my 2 bobs worth. :)
 
I just changed the coil packs on my 04 1.8 at 105,000 miles and it made a big difference to performance. Unfortunately your gonna have to look at this a fixer upper if it was bought cheap. The prop shaft on mine should have been removed long before it was as it was locked solid. There is a thread on repairing VCU's here if your handy with a spanner.

I am crap with a spanner lol thats why i have been touching myself all weekend after replacing the tailgate regulator :)

Well, there is no need to get quite that excited about it....lol! :)

You cant be that bad with the spanners, tailgate regulator isn't the worlds easiest job.
