Hi all

i had my series gearbox rebuilt a couple of years ago, but recently i have noticed, when i go more than about 30 or so miles the gearbox gets really noisy, it drops into gear great no issues there, ive changed the oil still no difference, when i press the clutch in its amazing how quiet it goes when the gearbox is disengaged, i fitted a 200di engine a couple of months ago, i cant see that doing anything, but you never know, as i say its fine when it cold, anyone got any ideas

hi there

yes i fitted a new clutch and spigot bush, when i fitted the 200di engine. its strange as the gearbox was rebuilt using all timkin bearing and as done less than 2000 miles, cant see them wearing out i that short time, its strange as its only done it since fitting the 200di, i was thinking when i fitted the 200di engine i had to remove the alignment dowels on the bell housing, and relied on the studs centering the input shaft, and they are only clearance holes so it could be that the input shaft is not exact centre in the spigot bush and as put undo stress on the gearbox. i was thinking of slackening the bell housing bolts off and jacking the back of gearbox up to see if it made any difference to the noise, or am i just clutching at straws with that theory.

it wasnt built with all timken brgs as most are ball brgs, series bell housing centers well on tdi as spigot fit so doesnt need dowels as later boxes, most likely one or more brgs worn

cant see why you say it wasnt rebuilt with timken bearings, when i stripped the main box i removed all the bearings and ordered all timken replacements from a bearing specialist, as all the old bearings that came out where timken. the transfer box was rebuilt using timken and the two roller and cage bearings where nsk bearings. but that said you can always get a duff bearing, just seems strange it only makes a noise when the gearbox is hot.

if you press the clutch pedal down to the floor and the noise goes away and returns when pedal is up - it is the clutch release bearing that has gone.

you didnt use timken as most are ball or roller brgs not taper the only 2 that are taper are on output shaft in transfer box ,you will have poor brg or brgs, look before it costs more as it damages itself, release brg would be noisy when pedal pressed stood still or driving
