Put my 2006 Freelander into the garage this week to replace the diff as there was a loud whine from the rear which got louder with speed. That was replaced but the whine from the rear is still there??? Next, both rear bearings are replaced and no prizes for guessing.....the noise is still there??

Anyone got any suggestions to help the garage out - it seems that they are replacing random parts with no noticible difference and meanwhile the bill is now hitting 1400 euros and they have still not fixed the cause of why I took it to them in the first place.

Maybe the garage is going on a vacation at your expense.

Did you tell them to replace the diff, or was it there idea to solve the problem ?

Suggest they drop the prop and VCU off and see if the fault is still there, could be the VCU centre bearings are on the way out. Trial and error is a very expensive way to diagnose defects, are they prepared to refit the parts that were not faulty FOC if not I would suggest you find a better garage.

It was their idea to change it. To be fair they drew out some oil and it had shards of metal in it - I'm no mechanic but it seemed a fair diagnosis.

The VCU bearings were replaced last month and my first thought was that they were at fault but the garage persuaded me otherwise - I'm now begging to regret listening to them!

Ask where they bought the bearings as there are cheap foreign (not EU) bearings on the market, there is one replacement VCU supplier on ebay that supplies these bearings as part of the VCU complete package. Many forum members have had to replace with better quality bearings due to excessive noise.

They assured me they were LR parts and charged me 200 euros for the pair and several hundred more to fit them. This car is turning into a moneypit.....a shame really as I've owned it for 3 years and until recently with no problems

I would still ask them to try with the props and VCU off before replacing any other parts. One of the difficulties in diagnosing transmission noise is that the noise is transmitted along the drive train so the problem could be related to a worn IRD but sounds like the diff, dropping the drive train off should prevent this from happening. Is the noise constant, only under load or on over run ?

Check that they fitted them square to the vcu and didn't just tighten them up however they ended up.
As the other op says i would drop the whole prop and vcu assembly and take it for a run to see if it's still noisy.......which the garage could have done when changing the bearings.
