No more volume control

So now i'd be worried if there was nothing wrong with my p38.

after cleaning the MAF sensor the volume on the radio isn't working properly...


I can here sound but its very quiet and the volume controls (on steering wheel as well) don't work.

all other functions are ok

also there is a strange buzzing (like - buzz buzz pause buzz buzz pause etc) from behind the hevac panel.

any ideas? the closest thing i've found is the DSP amp has failed?

its got the h/k system in

Good chance you have the Alpine head unit and single DSP amp behind the sub. The earlier Clarion units had a habit of going into telephone mute due to poor signals from the steering wheel controls, but I haven't heard of the Alpines doing this. Chances are your amp may be duff. You can check the output from the headunit with some iPod or similar earphones and some jumper wires.

ok cool thanks i'll check the dsp amp and headunit. does the amp have it' own fuse?

No idea what the buzz is. Another clue is if the DSP menu is missing from the headunit. There are I'm told, fuses inside the amp. I had mine checked out by my electronics guru and he recconed that it was the one of the chips blown on mine. Obviously they are not replaceable.

i can still control bass, treble and woofer. didn't check the "spatial" sound options...

How strange..I posted something regarding the telephone mute a little earlier....mine is a 2001 Y reg....any suggestions on a fix?

The telephone mute thing is common on the older clarion based units, again not heard of it affecting the later Alpines. Have you tried pulling the fuse to reset it ? (you have the code don't you). I think it's fuse 10 on the side of the drivers seat, best check that though, my memory is somewhat foggy. The fix for the clarions going into mute when a steering wheel button was pressed was a new set of steering wheel switches- next expensive.

mine goes into Mute when I have been on a long journey, usually after a couple of hours and the area around the radio gets quite warm due to the heating.... pushing/pulling at the front of the radio head unit puts it back into radio mode temporarily, so, I am assuming loose/ short connection due to heat expansion in or around the head unit.....

hmmm.

mine does it all the time from cold. other steering wheel buttons work ok though...

Did you ever fix this problem? I now have exactly the same problem.

If you're sat nav installed but it isn't working properly you will get this problem and I unplugged my duff Sat Nav which worked.

Now the problem is back again....cannot change volume but can change everything else. Display doesn't say mute. Head Unit is Alpine I believe as it is a 2001 Vogue.

Quick fiddle with the cruise control buttons and it seems to be ok

Ok I think I have found the problem and it wasn't the steering wheel controls. My problem is intermittent so when I started the car it seems ok after pressing all the buttons on the steering wheel.

Last night went for a drive listening to loud music and noticed that one of the front passenger side speakers sounds damaged, lots of crackling etc. Not 100% sure if the problem is just a speaker or whether the amp is broken as well.

Has anyone experienced a broken/'damaged amp?

I'll disconnect the suspect speaker and I would imagine if that is the only problem everything should work fine, then I can replace it.
