I can't get that big rubber washer to stay inside the 'housing' so that I can screw the filter back on. I've tried pushing it in but it just doesn't stay there. I've been trying for ages now, it's driving me crazy! Is there some trick I'm missing or do I just have to shove it in harder?

Tempted to swap the whole thing for a spin on one.

There isn't still an old one left in the slot, is there? You could use the rocker cover technique of gluing it in with evostik.

Yeah grease should work, I found with mine a blunt screwdriver helped to shove it in, but then mine looks like it's been run over by a bus :D

Run a flat screw driver round make there isn't the old one in I thought there wasn't but there was, like others have said but of the old oil or grease round the new one

Well just for anyone interested. In the end I used some instant gasket stuff, has worked so far! I think the previous owner had done the same thing because there was no washer in there to start with, just some white rubbery remains.

I smeared both the housing and filter cover with oil first which SHOULD make it a little easier to get back off again but I guess I'll find that out in 6 months or so!

At least you got sorted, the oil should stop it sticking..:D
