reet, welcome to the forum, let be the first to say welcome, before someone else jumps in and says burn it.

(ongoing problem on this forum)

Now the above is out of the way, lets deal with your problems one by one.

1) as you probably already know, 1.8 isn't the best engine choice, but if the head gasket has been changed, and as long as you a religious about checking coolant levels every week, or better every day, you will be doing as much as you can to avoid some of the complications of head gasket failure. Not much you can do to prevent the head gasket going when it decides it's time, but you can minimise the damage.
2) the missing prop shaft is a slight worry, and is usually done to disguise a failed VCU and/or failing IRD. Was it a private sale or from a trader ? If it was trade, you have good grounds for taking it back and asking for the prop to be fitted. Effectively, by removing the prop there is no drive to the rear wheels, and it is not therefore 4 wheel drive. Maybe not a problem to you, (search the forum for mondo mode)
3) The key may have a transponder in it, which would need to be coded to the car. Normally, Land Rover dealers would have to do it with test book, but there are a number of auto locksmiths which claim to be able to do this for you. Never had to do it, so can't speak from experience.
4) Similarly with the fob. You can re-synchronise a fob by pressing the buttons 5 times in quick succession, but not sure if this would work with a fob which wasn't coded to the car.

good luck.

the prop missing is either someone trying to save money on fuel, or more likely the ird unit is on its way out and they have removed the prop to hide it. if you got it from a dealer then take it back and get you money back. as it stands it aint even a 4x4. just a big 2wd car. if you brought private then you can either flog it on or fit a prop assy and see whats wrong with the drivetrain.
search on here for ird, vcu, rear diff, head gasket failure

i knew about the prop when i bought and was assurred it was taken off by the previous owner for fuel economy
what it was the guy took it to the garage for a headgasket waterpump and cambelt these were done & the guy couldnt pay the bill so they had the car
all they wanted was the bill paid so i gave £550 for the car
they said they took the prop of a few years ago for fuel economy but under the circumstances i cant see the guy giving it up even if he still has it. also it had anew clutch kit fitted last year at a cost of £541 so i dont think ive done to bad

on that basis, drive it as it is, might scrabble a bit for grip as a 2wd, mixed reports on here. check with your insurance co that they're happy, as it does seem to handle differently in 2wd.

but for £500, even if it lasts a year then you sell if for spares, still a result.

Won't work. It'll allow you to open the car and get it, but the engine won't start if the transponder wasn't coded for the car. All you do is set off the alarm...

id like to get a prop as it will be used for towing a caravan are all props the same?

1) You don't need 4wd to tow with

2) Wrong engine for towing a caravan with, the 1.8's are nippy, but they ain't got much grunt, so lots of low gear work and you will probably kill the clutch in no time if you come to any steep hills.

In answer to your question, no not all props are the same, you need one from a freelander 1.8, 'L' series or TD4 MAY fit, but don't quote me, V6 almost deffo won't as they have a different VCU underneath.

hi there and welcome from another newbie! not too sure about your prop problems, have enough trouble with my own!!!! but welcome to the forum and be prepared to get some s**t from some of the members, they don't seem to like the 1.8 petrol! as long as you are happy with it that's all that matters. happy driving!:crazy_driver:

Hi i'm also a newbie. I've got a similar issue as well. Mine is I've just exchanged the engine for a reconditioned motor. I have a 1.8l petrol in my freelander 1. I just exchanged it because the previous 1.8l took a valve out due to automatic belt tension-er failure. But now that i have the recon replaced, it just doesn't want to give spark to the plugs. everything else is fine and connected, except i heard that there is a crankshaft sensor plug somewhere and i just cannot find where. May someone please help me get spark to my plugs and fire this motor up? ANYONE?
