Hi all,

I bought a used 2001 (y) Freelander TD4 on the weekend, needed a few tweeks to bring it up to scratch, but overall its pretty nice.

This is my 1st 4x4, so i dont know much about the vehicle.

What is Hill Decent control for? and should i use it? (im not an off road driver)

also can i turn the 4x4 on or off?

Thanks

Craig

Yes, it's an analogue system but it's pretty clever. There's also barely any lag due to the slightly different gear ratios between the IRD and the rear diff.

No
simple, effective when working, but catastrophic when it doesnt. See my first post (and learn quickly).

Seconded there. Make sure that you a. have a VCU AND rear prop shaft in place and that it's b. in good working order - or you could potentially end up with a knackered IRD and or rear diff and a £2000 plus repair bill. So prevenion is better than cure - there's a sticky thread on the VCU in the freelander section.

Sooo..... while we've been chatting about this stuff, the freelander in question has been in a work shop being looked at to determine why is vibrates at 55mph.

the list included:

Transfer box
Prop Shaft
Ceased Wheel bearings
VCU

there is more but i cant remember them, any ways the quote is £2500 to fix is

bummer

What wtf they want to do all that? First of all the Freelander doesn't have a transfer box it has an Intermediate Redution Drive (IRD). Quite often here vibrations are traced to the VCU Bearings which need to be replaced by decent ones (generally the GKN ones are favoured.) But unless they are going to replace the VCU, IRD AND the rear Diff, then that price is daylight robbery!

Sounds like you need to get clued up about the car mate, even if you're not going to do the work yourself you need to know what makes it tick so that garages can't take the pish. What you've listed there consitutes pretty much the entire transmission save for the gearbox and all for finsind out what makes a little vibration. I strongly suggest you buy the Hayne's manual for your corrcet car year and read through it a bit. You will find that there are many servicing procedures that are dead easy and you can do yourself with very basic tools.

Whereabouts are you by the way? Might be there'll be a garage near you that knows Freelanders better.

Will.

Thanks Craig

The IRD should be the last thing you replace, if it was really fooked you'd know about it. If you're in the midlands, the best place for all things Freelander transmission is Bell Engineering - they use really good quality VCU's and IRD's that they have reconditioned themselves. It will save you alot of dosh. I imagine they can do the other work too. For now I'd reccomend you get them to remove the rear prop shaft so that you can hold onto it while you sort all this out - if your VCU is wearing out then you really don't want to have it connected as that will damage the IRD or rear diff.

And don't forget approved resellers of their parts;)
