Recently fitted 16 inch Kenlowe suction fan to my P38 diesel (direct wired so as to run on if necessary after switch-off). The damn thing was running when I went to my vehicle this morning (when cold). Touching the relay switches it off, then it comes on again after a few seconds. Can't find any wiring continuity errors. Is it really a duff relay or thermostatic rod? In a new fan? Have come across various posts out there (on this site too) about this happening, but no firm opinion on reliability (or even suitability) of this conversion.

The main spade connection to the fan (orange to grey that powers its higher speed) looks as though its been heating up (bit charred) and spade grip found to be a bit loose.

Just towed my two tonne caravan 350 miles to Cornwell. Not having much luck as have had to book vehicle in for replacement oil cooler pipes whilst down here!

you should be able to check continuity of thermostatic rod it should change resistance as temperature rises, the burnt connector doesn't sound special.

Loose push on connectors cause heating and charring of the plastic. If the car has aircon you could have saved yourself a few bob by using the aircon electric fans instead of buying a Kenlowe.

Kenlowe used to be excellent quality. As with everything else these days, you will, if you look closely find it is made abroad as cheaply as possible. Sad old world as far as vehicle parts are concerned, that we now live in. RIP quality car parts. Also the Kenlowe specific to the P38 is a 17 inch version.

Thanks guys, all helpful. It's a duff relay. Which would be even more irksome (so far away from home (with only limited iPhone access to Internet), if I hadn't already got Datatek's simple and ingenious alternative fitted as back-up - wiring in those air con fans! I just couldn't take any chances of overheating with such a long heavy tow.

However, I will be taking this up with Kenlowe. I mean, bad enough any time, but right now, with an unpredictable oil leak to be fixed. The precaution of buying a brand new item should not become unpredictable.
