New Freelander!

Well my poor old Commercial died a death at 239000 miles, gutted I didn't get it to 250k! Anyway, after 1 week with a new shape Grand Vitara which I hated I'm back with a new Freelander It's a 2006 Sport which looks very nice and has 18" alloys. Question I have is it seems to sit higher than my old Commercial, I measured the centre of the wheel to the bottom of the arch at the front and it is 19"

Anyone else with a Sport able to measure theirs please? Mine has no Sport stickers on, it only says it on the log book. I thought Sports were lowered so this doesn't make sense as I'm sure my Commercial measure 18" from hub to arch.

Hi cant help with the sport but your old commercial would probably be on 16 inch my normal freelander is 18 inch hub to arch and thats on 16,s could be that its on 18inch ,according to haynes manual ground clearance on sport is 165mm and on normal is 186mm hope this is of some use

2006MY Sport variants weren't lowered as they had the higher GVW to get around emissions regs for a while longer!

Thanks. I did notice in the handbook whilst looking for tyre pressures that mine had a 2505KG Max weight and that the models with 16" alloys had a much lower Max weight of 1905KG from memory. Out of interest, how did the extra weight get around emissions?

So it would seem that mine is running about 30mm higher than standard due to the bigger wheels.

Emissions regs are set as a combo of weight, co2 amongst other things - increasing the GVW changed the allowable limits for emissions and hence allowed FL1 to be sold up until the intro of FL2 and didn't leave a gap in the model line up.

It's a common 'trick' by the manufacturers to reclassify a vehicles weight etc to change its classification and hence the requirements it needs to meet.

Am I being thick, but the size of the wheel has nothing to do with ride height. Its the combo of wheel and tyre that would determine ride height. I'm running 195/80R15 - so I''m running an '80' profile on 195 width and 15" wheels. You're tyres look a damn sight skinnier than mine and with 18" wheels, I'm guessing the rolling diameter would equate to the same.

I just tapped my tyre spec into these pages...

They came back and says the diameter is 27.3 inches - maybe you can try yours? Have you checked to see if the suspension has been raised? Will be lumps of steel on top of the struts and probably a chunk cut out of the front inner wheel arches.

Yeah your correct the hub to arch measurement is dictated by the suspension and not wheel size so I was been thick! Put my tyre size in and the diameter is a tad over 28 inches for my wheels. Standard 16's are 27 inches so I guess that equates to half an inch in ride height. Just remeasured the distance between the centre of the hub and arch and it's approx the same as yesterday. No spacers or cut arches that I can see. Cheers
