New Freelander (well new to me)

Hello. New to this forum although have used others. Have just put a deposit on a 2004 freelander td4. Have requested crankcase filter renewal as there was some blue smoke on startup which did clear. Car had been standing on a forecourt for a few weeks so I suppose this could have also been a factor. No smoke on test drive. However there is a three month warranty on the car. Dealer was a bit offended when I checked the propshaft was there as he said he knew why I checked but he would not try to hide a faulty VCU. (thats what they all say) Anyway I was just wondering if anyone could suggest anything else I need to look out for before I part with my old car and the bulk of the cash. Thanks.

Have a look around the Freelander section; any pitfalls will no doubt have been covered in there. A dealer who doesn't expect prospective buyers of 4x4s to go looking underneath the vehicle? Whatever next?

Thanks. Have just been reading through the Freelander section. So... Its done 66000 miles with history sunfoof worked so will be used daily. Back windows worked so touch wood the will continue to do so. I don't Know if the vcu has been changed but there was no knocking or grinding noise when I drove it or reversed. However I live about 50mins from bell engineering and had budgeted for a cambelt change, as the td4 is chain driven I think I will pay them a visit to have the transmission checked and if necessary a reconditioned vcu with the cambelt fund.
