Hi, just so you have the full picture here it is from the start........

1999 4.6 thor p38

Basically I have taken out the old 4.6 with overheating/pressure problems, I got a secondhand re-linered 4.6 gems block that had been backdated to run an early front cover with a dizzy in a classic.

I have changed everything over from my block to run it as a thor setup used my original crank sensors and knock sensors with a new cam, followers, pulleys and chain.

It's not the 1st Rover v8 I have ever built so am happy / confidant that internally cam timing etc is all correct.

Now the problem starts....

It's all back in ready for the 1st fire up........ but no spark!!

I have done the key re sync, I have done the EKA steps, I have the "check engine light" on the dash but still no spark???

I have checked the crank sensors are connected (I must admit at 1st I had missed connecting the front sensor and the left bank coil!!) I have even taken out and put back in the flywheel crank sensor.

What am I missing???

unfortunatly I have no diagnostic equipment or any access to any.......unless anyone is close to Aberystwyth that I could borrow from?

Also I am useless with anything to do with electric....it is all witchcraft to me!!

Help anyone please????

Steve

No, not done that, never crossed my mind as all was fine before I took the old engine out, guess I've got nothing to loose by checking them though.

Thanks

Hi, will check that as well, could you confirm if it has gone out of sync, would it still turn over normal? does it then just loose spark or spark and fuel? if it is imobalised would the engine turn over but no spark?

This is very frustrating, I have been at this engine since early January, I can only get a short bit of time here and there because my wife is very ill and back and forward to hostpital, finally got it all back together and now this problem!!!!

I will go and do my checks and report back........

yes turns over but dont start there are two codes for it if you have a code reader p1667 p1672 they are the out of sync codes..

I have a code reader that I bought for Wifeys Beetle, I guess just a normal obd type reader, would this get the codes? I believe some of the codes are/can be read by obd readers??

Could I down load software for it anyware? Its just one of those cheapy ones of Fleabay

Steve

try it just plug it in some work some dont, if you where closer to me i would have come out and sorted it for you. i have sent you a pm.

Unfortunatley even with some superb and appretiated help from J I still have no go :(

It seems it is in sync, I still have no spark and as far as I can tell no fuel, this points to the crank sensor then? I have already pulled the sensor out and looked at it... that never sorted it! unplugged the connector and looked at it...... that never sorted it either! I've sworn at it.......still not sorted!!

How do I test the sensor?

I've not got or found anyone local with a faultmate or any other proper Range Rover compatible code reader, I borrowed a mactools obd reader from a mate this afternoon but it came up no faults stored :( now this could be that the reader will not read from the RR or could it be that there are no faults to be found/recorded or could it be because the engine has not actually run since going back in that no fault would have been logged as not running means there are no faults to report if you see what I mean??

I've checked as many connections as I can think of, coils, crank sensor, cam sensor, I've checked for spark from both sides incase it is only one coil pack showing a fault but neither side spark.

I'm begining to wonder did I get the cam timming right, but then would this affect the sensor positions and then the sparks? surely this would just make it fire in the wrong place and not run?........ Not that I have any reason to believe that the cam timing is out just things going through my mind!!

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm going to Manchester tomorrow for the w/e and back on Sunday afternoon, anyone around or on the way have a spare crank sensor (thor engine) that I could pick up and borrow/hire/buy and post back early next week just to prove mine is fine? same goes for a fault reader?

Thanks

Steve
