I understand that this is what we are being told, so how come Merc' can sell the GWagon and Jeep can sell the Wrangler both have similar profile and build issues. As for emissions the current Defender has the latest transit engine there is no reason why it can't have the next generation engines to keep up with the requirements.

Defenders have removable roofs anyway. It's just a matter of unbolting it. I suppose the key thing is a way of removing the roof conveniently, rather than struggling for hours with rusty fastenings.

It's just journalism I know, so don't take it too seriously. But other manufacturers are revising models to match the legislation in their various markets. Plus of course their lobbyists and other representatives will be talking to legislators behind the scenes, so that politicians can make it look like they're champions of road safety and the manufacturers get legislation which matches their capabilities and (they hope) makes it a bit easier for them than the competition.

If they built one that could be sold in the US I'm sure they'd sell enough, if people are paying 80k for a 25 year old one there must be a market for new ones at 40k

I expect that's exactly what they're tooling up for, even as we speak.

Im not a fan of the dc100 as the defender, if it was sold as a different model then fair play. I really do hope that LR don't ruin the defender in its next guise.

As much as I hate to bring the J word and as many times as I have said it, LR needs to emulate the Jeep Wrangler JK - it's been hugely successful as it emulates original Jeep models keeping to the same construction type, appearance and improved capability whilst still being easily home serviceable and with the option for many aftermarket upgrades. Plus you can get it in LWB and SWB, soft top or removable hard top. Ultimately, it has proper axles and not this shopping truck independent stuff. You can remotely disconnect the sway/roll bars too. The list goes on. It's still a proper 4x4 in a modern guise.
