Fellow member has a Nanocom listed in sale section, that is for the Landrover V8.
I know It would need unlock codes to be used with my P38 Diesel. But looks like there are two codes for the P38, one for engine bits etc and one for other items.

I'm not familiar with diagnostic kits for cars, so would I need both codes or just the engine one if thats the one thats going to be used more often?
Also web site says would need a second lead for one of the unlocks to work. Seller has item listed with blue and green leads. would they be the ones needed or still need another different lead?

Just trying to way up economics of buying a used unit and then buying codes etc, or whether it would be more economical to bite the bullet and go down new unit route?

Cheers.

Buying a used Nanocom is the economical way to go especially if it were kept in good condition.
I paid 180 quid for my used Nanocom for a TD5 Disco 2 and gladly paid another 50 quid for the Disco 2 V8 unlock code. Now I have both unlock codes to help other Disco 2 owners.
Since using it for almost a year, it's paid for itself 10x already by correcting faults on the spot and not having to go to the LR garage and pay out the wazoo for maintenance costs.

Best investment you can make if you are going to play with RR and early disco's. :)
The leads can vary (according to the car) but the core S/W only need unlocking for the model specific bits I think.
Mine has been a godsend, and have gone to help others with their P38 Thor RR's.

Ncom 06 is the diesel one. The V8 Thor/gems versions won't work on your EDC but with a unit the unlock code can be then bought.

If you need EAS diagnostics ask Datatek. He does a kit for members that is best and not rip off price

Thanks.
I've checked out web already, and its a close call as to which would be most economical option.
New is, as you say, Ncom06. But looking at unlock packs to use with a second hand unit, looks like i'd need Ncom16 and Ncom18. Roughly £114 and £58 respectively. 16 gives access to the Becm, Wabco, air bags etc, and 18 the EDC management.

As its all new to me, can any users advise whether both are actually needed? (guess they are) Because by the time I factor the unlock costs in, the unit it self would have to be bought for around the £200 mark, other wise, there's not a great deal more to be paid to get a new one. which I presume comes with warranty etc?

I Don't need EAS as it been converted to springs, would have liked air, but it is what it is.

Any nanocom will talk to all the other modules such as BECM. All you need is the edc and you can do everything on your diesel.
You will also keep the petrol one for if you ever decide to buy one with a proper engine in it! :D

Is the one you're looking at unlocked for petrol p38? I'm guessing so as you said it comes with green lead.
If so, then all you need is ncom 18 at 58 quid Inc vat.

Are you referring to the one I have up for sale?
Yeah, just trying to get my head round what I'll need, and costs etc. Never had or needed diagnostics before, but P38 owner ship seems to dictate other wise.
Did message you about it earlier on.
Cheers.

The cable it's got is the blue one as it's for a Discovery.
Just for clarification the two codes it comes with have the following descriptions:
  • Valeo Body Control, ACE, SLABS, Auto box and SRS Airbag (Discovery 2)
  • Motronic V8 Engine (Discovery 2 and from 1999 onwards on P38)

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it. But unless I'm mistaken that means I would need the Green cable, plus the two Unlock codes, which will be around £230, so think I'll have to give yours a swerve as I'm approaching new cost territory.

Best of luck with the sale though. And thanks for all your info.
Cheers

I’ve kept my eye out for exact same since October. I ‘needed’ one then, but now with all the great help and support off the LZ family here it’s now a ‘want’ as it’s fixed to the point where a nanocom is not a necessity anymore and has cost less than a 2nd hand unit in the end. How much reading would you do for £250 eh? ;)

(I have coils too - shhh!)

If you want a good cheap diagnostic tester, get a Foxwell NT520 Pro for all Land Rover models.
If you plan on keeping your Land Rover for some time, spend the money and get the Nanocom along with the two P38 unlock codes and a green OBDII cable.
